The Theme Of Battle And Battle Poems

In this article I would be explaining how six war poems explore the theme of war. Drummer Hodge was compiled by Thomas hardy in 1899. He composed it after he browse the death of a local drummer young man in the Boer battle. Hodge was a nickname given to country people at that time. He used the name showing how cruel battle can be on innocent individuals. In the first line of the poem it says "they chuck in Drummer Hodge. " This portrays the image that maybe people don't really value the young soldier and this he's worthless and is like rubbish. The poem portrays the theme of war in different ways for different people. For the Drummer Hodge the theme that is portrayed is dread and anger because no person really cared if he passed on we understand this impression whenever we read collection "his landmark is a kopie crest that breaks the veldt around" this advised that the young Drummer Hodge won't get a grave stone and you will be forgotten also the poem shows that Drummer Hodge will not know this is of life and is also fresh from his home also the poem portrays the image that Drummer Hodge will be ignored and will be a part of dynamics when he finally dies. We see this near the end of the poem. " His north breast and brain grow for some southern tree". This poem expresses a lot of anger towards battle and explores the theme of conflict in a whole lot of information.

The next poem I will be talking about is Suicide in the trenches.

This poem was compiled by Siegfried Sassoon in 1917. Suicide in the trenches starts of by discussing a young son who is in the First World Warfare and is trapped in a trench and eventually ends up committing suicide. Due to all the bad conditions in the trenches. Sassoon explored the theme of warfare in that he thought it was a poor thing a terrible thing to expire and. Sassoon hated war he portrayed it as horrid and fearful and really described the enduring the soldiers went through. Lots of men and kids were killing themselves because if it "he pit a bullet through his brain and nobody spoke of him again"

Lots of men who required their own lives were regarded as cowardly. In the first stanza you get the note that the poem is about a young son who enjoys life in the battle but as you read on you get a very different note. Sassoon is exploring the theme of warfare just as as some of the other poets. He's saying conflict is horrible and that it is not an honour to fight in also Sassoon indicated a great deal of anger and miserable in this poem also the poem is very unfortunate and has a robust message placed by the poet.

The next poem I'd like to write about is Dulce ET Decorum Est. This poem was written in 1917 by Wilfred Owen during the First World Battle which was about the terrible experience of warfare.

Dulce et Decorum Est. its note is that warfare is not heroic and dyeing for your country is not anything to be praised. Dulce et Decorum Est. actually means 'It is lovely and appropriate to die for one's country" just from the title you'll think the poem is going to be about noble soldiers fighting and being successful wars. But you get a very different communication as you read on. Also the title of the poem is absolutely ironic because you are informing individuals who it is great to perish for your country even through the poem is about how precisely cruel and awful war is. Throughout the poem the article writer gives a powerful meaning from the first collection to the last. The theme of war in this poem is not good. In the first stanza the copy writer explains the horror of what war can do to our body 'Men marched asleep. Many experienced lost their boots but limped on, blood-shod". Most of the poem is about a soldier trapped in a gas harm. From the subject the writer enables you to feel that the military are smart happy and happy to combat.

Which in the starting stanza you get a completely different idea of what the theme is really. The theme that the article writer gives us is dependant on his passed connection with war for himself. Owen provides reader a lot of images of the particular people appeared as if and what they were felling during the war the poem enables you to fell just like you were viewing all the men dyeing from the fatal gas. The men in the poem were very tired and many were dyeing Owen points out this in the poem "bent double, like old beggars under sacks". If you are scanning this poem you learn about the gas you are incredibly happy that the gas masks are on but then you realize that someone hasn't got there's on yet and is also little by little dyeing and no person can help or save him. Owen portrays the felling of fear and disgust that he would like someone to feel because of this poor soldier that perished a horrid fatality. Owen explores the theme of battle in a very powerful way his poem was truthful which makes it even better. Also the writer portrays the theme of warfare a whole lot he evens places in his poem that even the devil would hate it and he details things in his poem perfectly.

He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning this shows how badly the soldier was hurting and the reader really can feel for the man who died. Owen is checking out the theme of war well he wishes you to assume you are there on the struggle field he provides very strong images of this so you really can know very well what it was like for every one of the military on the battle field. The Copy writer in the poem explores the theme of battle in ways which is terrible and fearful also the poet expresses a great deal of sadness and a lot of fear.

The fee of the light Brigade. Written by Alfred, Lord, Tennyson in 1854. The poem is about the battle of Balaclava in the Crimean battle which was between Russia using one side and Britain, France and turkey on the other. The poem is also about fights and the deaths of a huge selection of loyal troops and the knowledge of battle the writer portrays is completely different than many of the other poems. Through the poem the copy writer tells us how Great Battle is despite over 1000 soldiers were delivered to their graves. The poem is also about how precisely the brave British soldiers travelled into battle knowing they might be killed. The poem commences with the light brigade charging into the valley of death. Already the copy writer is trying to build a graphic of the bravery of the troops and continues to take action through out the poem.

Through from the poem the article writer uses tons of good terminology to offer pictures of the battle he was writing about. In this particular poem Tennyson portrays that warfare is good and is also fun. Inside the poem the writer uses words like "the oral cavity of hell" "The valley of death" he uses these words to offer an obvious picture of what fate awaits the six hundred soldiers in fight. Tennyson portrays a lot of things in his poem another thing he portrays is the great control the military had for following orders even though the facial skin of death was staring them in the face. Six hundred is almost mentioned by the end of every stanza thus giving you the thought of the fantastic kind of damage these men faced during the warfare. At the end of the poem the article writer says Honor the charge they made. Honour the Light Brigade the article writer is informing us to honor and value what these men had done even though each of them died the troops are being celebrated as mighty heroes. This poem explores the theme of war in the sense that conflict is good plus some thing to be proud of.

On the eve of remembrance.

Was written by Laura Oliver in 2004.

The theme of conflict in this poem is fearful and you simply get that from the first series to the previous. The poet begins of by expressing "into Iraq if dare not go" this portrays the image that it is not a excellent place the next range says. "Where there are bodies row after row" the poet is presenting of an extremely terrible image of what is like for many people. Through out the first stanza you have the image that the poem is going to be about fatality and killing.

The poet explores the theme of war in the sense of annoyed and death conflict in this person eyes is bad. The poem is an extremely powerful poem from learn to finish. In the next stanza the poet says that people should honour are noble soldiers "they resided; died fought a true foe and that people should keep in mind the soldiers and all they have done. In the ultimate stanza the poet discusses struggling with and anger. The theme of war in this poem is anger and despair for the soldiers in the battle also the theme is remembrance and sadness.

In conclusion I think the theme of battle has been portrayed in lots of different ways by different poets. Some poets exhibit anger and sadness while some express happiness and portray that warfare is good and dyeing for your country is good I think the theme of war is stronger in some poems than others but overall the theme his been portrayed in lots of different ways
