What is the first thought that involves head when I say the term teenagers? Is it that we're accountable, smart, high achieving? No. It's that we're violent, out-of-control, narcissistic or maybe plain rude. I understand for an undeniable fact that this is not an accurate representation of who I am, or who my friends and classmates are.
Just because the advertising bombards us, on a regular basis, with images demoting teens, it doesn't signify we all function and/or behave that one way. I assume that the negative coverage in today's press could only be utilized to portray a group of teens.
Good day/afternoon Best Minister, distinguished friends and fellow Young ones Associates. My I am here with respect to my school, Hand Beach-Currumbin SHS, also to give a tone of voice to today's youngsters. I am going to discuss a few of the issues that face teenagers in today's scientific culture as well as why and exactly how they came into being, although the key issue I will be focussing on is all different elements that control and manipulate teenagers from not only today's society but from earlier years as well.
Every teen differs and a person in their own right, likewise as adults. I believe most teenagers are just looking for meaning in their lives and hoping to reach a spot of self-reliance.
I am really astonished by all the cynical and prejudiced assumptions most people make. As an adolescent, I (and the majority of my friends) make an effort to learn and increase, have proper sentence structure skills, nor go off partying every evening. I hope that you, as wide open minded, responsible individuals are able pay attention to what I must say on behalf of my generation and give us an opportunity before you write us off as 'stupid punks'. Generally, if you respect young adults, we will respect you in exchange.
Every older technology makes the declare that teens today are out of control, have no willpower, are into offense, their clothes are odd, their music is noise, etc. From the subjective illusion that leaves no room for corrections. That is nothing new. More mature generations would like to think that they were well-behaved teens and this crime didn't exist in their time, but they're just fooling themselves. Definitely, it can not be true that each generation is getting "worse", because that would mean the globe was a utopia just 200 years back, and history shows that it plainly wasn't. Socrates said that "The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for power; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter. . . , " 2400 years back, so did the entire world somehow progress and then resorted back to the techniques Socrates has explained? Inside the 1950's teens defied their parents and population by following rebellious trend that was Rock 'n' Roll, the 1960's shown the planet with the 'Hippy Period' which created an increase in medication use and unintentional pregnancies consequently of the Vietnam conflict, there was intimate liberation in the 1970's due to the creation of the contraceptive pill, which then led in to the 1980's where teenagers were reckless using their relationships and hence the finding of Products.
The media cannot present the earth to us, despite their assertions of fact and truth. The mass media offer us perspectives or picked views of the world around us. They build images and behaviours to effect their audience into believing their views of what's "right". So we are aware of what family life is like represented in a variety of tv set soaps such as Neighbours and Home & Away. We have understanding of sportspeople through athletics coverage in the press and on tv programmes. We could dependent on the press for our insights into what is happening in the current society and what it was prefer to live in a time before we were delivered.
This article I came across was written by an anonymous teen explaining:
What is wrong with today's teens is today's men and women.
You used to wake me up, make my breakfast time, pack my lunchtime and take me to the bus stop.
Now - I get myself up, eat no breakfast, and get a candy bar for meal.
You used to be there when I acquired off the bus - you paid attention to my day. Then you visited fix meal while I used my friends.
Now - I get back to an empty house, let myself in, allow dog away and look for something to do to fill up the lonely hours until you get back from work. This unsupervised time is the optimum time for me to find yourself in trouble.
You used to listen to my problems and guide me.
Now - You are so occupied with your job that you dismiss my problems, and pray that they will go away - THEY DON'T
You used for taking me on walks, bike ride beside me, or swing me at the playground.
Now - You buy me "factors", the best money can buy, but you aren't around to invest time with me at night anymore.
We used to get up and venture out on Weekend as a family group.
Now - It's your only day to settle - so we don't go any longer.
You used to remember to discipline me - to care and attention enough to teach me from wrong.
Now - You're too tired to be concerned about me and the individual I'm becoming.
I miss you - I skip the time we used to invest jointly. Where am I suppose to find out about life, to find out about character, notion in myself, credibility, work ethic, willpower and integrity????
Every time you pick up a papers or watch a information program, the thing is another story chatting about how exactly there something amiss with present teens. After young adults shot their classmates at Columbine High, Newsweek's cover exhibited the face of any troubled teen that looked irritated and dangerous. The headline explained in bold words, "THE TRICK Life of Young adults. " So what does everyone assume from this one event? They immediately presume that all teenagers are covering their true selves, which is in fact reckless and out of control.
Who writes this stuff? Have these editors talked to a teenager currently? They make it appear to be we're all prepared to blow up our colleges with bombs that we built-in our rooms. They accuse us of experiencing key lives, but we're not the ones that 're going around having affairs with interns so that point magazine can publish a cover story saying "The way the Scandal Was BEST FOR America" (Feb 22, 1999). That cover seemed to excuse Leader Clinton for his affair with Monica Lewinsky.
When an adolescent commits a terrible crime, the marketing connects the offense with the teen's get older. They make it appear to be all young adults are like that. But when an adult commits a horrible crime, the press doesn't try to make it appear to be all individuals are serial killers.
Adults speak about wanting teens to succeed but often they obstruct the path to success. They don't retain us because we don't have experience. But just how do we get experience if we aren't chosen for a job and given a good go?
It is people who cut the education budget. It really is people who make the decisions that leave us with tattered literature, unqualified teachers and recliners that rock backwards and forwards because their feet are uneven. Additionally it is adults who allocate additional money to prisoners than to students. So why doesn't the multimedia report how hard it is to get into a decent college or university or how many hours young adults spend a evening on homework and projects?
So the next time an adult asks, what's incorrect with today's teenagers ask them, "What's wrong with today's men and women?"
This research (shown on powerpoint) with the Australian Leadership Basis in January 2002 demonstrates the biggest separate facing our culture is not really a gender separate, racial split, income or technology divide but it's the generational divide. For anybody who are involved in engaging young people, like me, you must understand that the distance between us therefore you is continually growing, young adults today are the technologically savvy and internationally connected technology that is remaking the image of the normal consumer.
The multimedia, including television, journals, radio, internet and billboards encircle everyone daily, mailing messages about what items to buy as well as how to act and react. While the effect is evident among the mature population, the result is even more profound on the teenage society. The present day media has established a concentrate on on children, influencing them to smoke cigarettes, drink, look a certain way and dress a certain way to become accepted by world even if you are too young or it is illegitimate for you to do these exact things. We are described as 'Generation-me', and the only thing that ever before comes out of our mouths is 'I Want'.
Those of you old enough to operate a vehicle without an ID check might rotate your sight. "I used to be never that self-centred, " you say. "Back my day, [put heroic account about walking five miles to university barefoot in a blizzard here]. "
Holden Caulfield, created in 1951 at age group 16, in the pages of "The Catcher in the Rye, " might not have been the 'original' teen, but he was the main one who released to the earth the concept of teenage angst, which is still strongly in attendance almost 60 years later.
Maybe today there isn't the same enjoyment in picking right up "The Catcher in the Rye" and reading Holden's self-involved take on the world. The theory is barely radical or extreme ever again, not when most children publish every second of their lives on the communal networking sites such as Myspace, Twitter and Facebook. "The Catcher in the Rye" still kept rebellious qualities of some teenagers today such as drinking alcohol, flunking/ditching school and steering clear of parents.
Although in a period period shortly before this e book was written, teenage-hood was much different. A girl was considered marriageable time when her parents said so, this may be as early as 12. Most children only go to school until the 6th level, and they were considered old enough to marry and start families. Young adults usually proved helpful in whatever type of business their family is at, if your Daddy was a storekeeper, you worked in the store. In case your Father was a farmer, you'll focus on a farm. Usually by the time these were 15 yrs. old, they were starting their own families.
Elements such as teens' up-bringing, the media and past occasions all combine to impact on teens' breakthrough of their own personality. The main aspect being the multimedia, as it is such a part of every day life. The press has indeed become very controlling and manipulative in this modern world; the marketing shapes us and we form it.
Today's teens will be like everybody else who has truly gone through the teenage years. Whenever you were an adolescent you probably provided your parents grief and so, they might have pondered what would become of the younger generation. You now are the more mature generation and you wonder exactly what will become of younger generation. We will eventually be the more aged generation and will wonder exactly what will become of the younger era -- thus the routine goes on as it always has and always will.
