Occupations are a part of everyday life and could even form an integral part of a person's living. The occupation talked about is definitely not one's profession choice but regarding to Kielhofner's it is "the doing of work, play or activities of everyday living in a temporal, physical and socio-cultural framework that characterises much of human life" (1). Kielhofner emphasises the importance of occupation, however one cannot grasp the importance of occupations until they have seen the impact it has on people. Occupations are also more personal and refer to long-term goals. In this essay I am reflecting on two happenings where the importance of occupation to occupational remedy is clearly obvious. I will also be integrating theories from other subjects taken through the year.
The first event was in the beginning of the year whenever we first started learning about occupations, occupational performance and activities healthy. Occupational performance refers to the ability to do certain responsibilities or activities; it can also make reference to how well an individual can do a task (2). Based on the World Health Organisation, health can be afflicted by not having the ability to perform activities, hence being struggling to perform occupations (2). This is an immediate light bulb moment for me personally as I considered my grandfather, who had a terrible stroke where a huge part of his body was paralysed resulting in him being bed-ridden and not having the ability to the actions that he i did so. Being struggling to do anything lead to him becoming depressed and his health quickly deteriorated.
We also learned that health isn't just affected when you are able to do occupations but also by the balance between the regions of occupation. Areas of occupation refer to life activities such as activities of everyday living, survivals skills, rest and sleep, education, work and play. Every single person participates almost all of these occupations and they cannot function without the majority of these areas. When there is a balance between these areas then a person can be considered activities healthy and that they have balanced lifestyle. However, when there is too little balance in these areas additionally, it may cause problems which I have in person experienced scheduled to being ignorant at that time.
During my first time of Biomedical health research in 2009 2009, I got what occupational therapists would call "activities unsafe" when i had a lack of balance in my life where I spent too much time on my studies and neglected the other areas of my life such as sleep and leisure. My weekdays consisted of varsity throughout the day and studying at night until the early time of the morning. This insomnia prevented my body and head from rejuvenating (2). This sleeping deprivation lead to me being irritable and having a lower life expectancy attention span which influenced my studies (3). My weekends were put in learning and doing jobs which designed that my leisure activities were neglected and I got no form of relaxation or de-stressing. My stress levels increased and my immune-system was decreased leading to bronchitis for three weeks. At that time, I did so not associate my poor health with the poor lifestyle and stress but now I have an understanding of activities healthy from an occupational therapy viewpoint as well as a knowledge of stress and how it relates to health from a psychology perspective (4). With this understanding I've realised the mistakes of my ways no longer take sleep or leisure for granted which both aid in lowering high stress levels. For one to grasp how stress can affect health it is advisable to review what's learnt in both psychology as well as understand the natural processes of your body.

The play section of this year was an extremely enlightening section for me personally as I work with children of varied ages and have younger siblings. Understanding the value of play was confirmed by both occupational remedy and mindset. From an occupational remedy perspective play is an essential part of the therapeutic process and is the ultimate way to rehabilitate children as well as improve any lacking skills. While doing field work, I discovered my fourth yr performing a facilitated play period with paint. Public skills can be developed by playing in teams or doing role play in which a child learns about assignments and cultural norms (9). For example, once i was babysitting a four 12 months old female, we decided to play with plastic vegetables and other foods. She immediately decided that she would be the mom and I was the kid. She proceeded to dish up a plate of vegetables and instructed that we had to consume all of them or I am going to not be permitted to eat any dessert. This form of play allowed her to explore the role of an mom and explore what it is similar to to exercise specialist. As an occupational therapist it is essential for us to learn a person's occupation as well as the associated activities.
