The Importance of Duty in George Eliot's Silas Marner Essay

The value of Duty in George Eliot's Silas Marner

In George Eliot's novel, 'Silas Marner', there may be much proof to

suggest that duty is important. In the book 'Silas Marner', duty is usually

presented through parenting and community. Work means conducts that

happen to be due to other folks. Duties will be various capabilities that we have to

follow, and they are generally moral responsibilities to others. This can be all authentic for

this novel, yet also it way to show kindness, generosity, and

respect to get the community, customs and friends and family. Duty is a large component

of this story and it is based on the ideals of practical

Christianity, in part one. With this novel, the people are plainly

divided into two separate classes of people; those who neglect responsibility

and are penalized, and those who have honour duty and are last mentioned rewarded.

With this novel, Silas himself has an obligation to Eppie, Eppie has an

responsibility to Silas, and Godfrey has an obligation to Molly, Nancy and

his dad.

However , however respect work, there are those in this story

who happen to be disrespectful towards duty, and are not in any way or type

dutiful whatsoever. The people that neglect responsibility include the Cass family

comprising the Old Squire, Godfrey and Dunsey. Likewise the community

for Lantern Lawn neglect work, of which Bill Dane especially

neglects work. The Lantern Yard community neglects all their duty because they

wrongly animadvert on Silas of theft. All of these people that disregard duty in

this novel, would probably feel dissapointed about that they ever did neglect duty because

in the end from the novel they all get penalized for their wrong doings.

From this novel, the Cass family is one of the most severe families, in terms

of satisfying duty. The Ol...

... hroughout the book, but honoured them. All those

that honour duty in this book include Silas, Eppie, the Lammeter

family (Pricilla), plus the Winthrop friends and family (Dolly and Aaron). Inside the

end Pricilla gets to manage and operate the farm, and that is the reward

pertaining to caring for her father. Silas is paid by obtaining his rare metal back

through Eppie getting loyal to him and never leaving him, and also he

regains his trust in Our god. Eppie, whom stays with Silas, is definitely rewarded simply by

her marriage to Aaron Winthrop. Finally Dolly is usually rewarded once her kid

marries Eppie, and the girl gets true gratification to make Silas who have

is.

'Duty' is a key theme of Silas Marner. It really is one of the 'practical

aspects' of Christianity, preferred by Eliot. The book could be stated

to be a 'fable'. But really in that, Nancy follows obligation but can be

still penalized.
