This article would focus on this issue of globalization taking along other factors with it. Increasingly more, it is obvious that the globalization is included in virtually all the businesses of the world. Every market for some reason or the other is following the principles of globalization. McDonalds is a string of restaurants employed in collaboration to provide their customers with the best product. It also follows the concepts of globalization. This essay will discuss an ethnographic study at McDonalds as it confirms or denies the claims made about globalization.
The ethnographic review is defined in McDonalds' shop, Leeds; on the day of Mon 17th January 2011. From away I could observe the huge logo of McDonalds. I stood at the entry and stared at the look for few seconds. The shop was a lot more elegant than the average McDonald's. The interior looked very modern day with posh chair, tables, black art work deco fittings, beautiful paintings and attractive equipment and lighting and draperies. Also, outdoors were window boxed filled up with flowers or greenery. I possibly could hear some relaxing music. At first glance, I noticed that customers were people with different age groups, genders, cultural classes, public classes and ethnic backgrounds. The words that was more spoken was British. Without thinking, I was moving on the counter, I confronted the lady behind the counter-top; she was wearing a red t-shirt with a cover and a hut. She appeared to be pretty quickly to handle the orders. Despite that, she was friendly and with a look on the face to welcome the clients. The most common food they offered which was popular in the customers involved hamburgers, hen sandwiches, French Fries, shakes, nuggets, rice and ice products. After I paid and required my order, I seemed around and there was an empty stand in the area. The furniture and the floor were cleaned when a person leaves. I seen a small band of young boys and girls joining in the McDonalds' shop and they were various different nationalities (Greek, German, Nigerian, Italian), maybe there were students to the local university. They purchased their meals and sat close to my table. They were too noisy and started discussing their new-year programs. Next to them, an English category of four appreciated their food. Children were much more likely to opt for kids' meals like happy foods which include gadgets for the kids that fascinate them. Young families go for family meals and discounts which provide cheaper rates for the kids. On the other hand of McDonalds' shop, there were people who had been reading magazines, newspapers and books. Within the entrance, a Chinese language couple entered, they seemed like tourists as that they had a map and a camera in their palm. The division of labour as I observed comprised of more female staff than male. The reason behind such syndication of labour might be the timings that I chose to see. Your day timings may become more of comfort for the feminine staff and the night shifts may have more male members than girl. Around 8 employees worked at a time excluding the manager. The staff made up of English, People from france and Pakistani individuals. The careers were distributed in various categories according to the skills, competence level and qualification of each worker. Cashiers, food making personnel, cleaning staff, employees working with drive-through customers and supervisors were all working to avoid any mishaps and quality compromising function.
The idea of globalization is no more new. It has been completely realized and reviewed by theorists, experts, practitioners, teachers etc. Regardless of the popularity given to this concept, lots of areas are still remaining to be explored about globalization. The recent conversations on globalization involve the quarrels on its presence, the importance directed at it today when compared with the past, the change in the concept of nation and citizenship because of globalization, the value of globalization as against regionalism and localism. In addition a crucial debate is continuously growing on about the negative and positive influences of globalization and exploring how individuals who are directly or indirectly influenced by the changes earned by this concept.
Globalization is a comprehensive and wide issue which covers a huge set of important issues including monetary, social, political, cultural, spiritual and moral etc. The definition of globalization is identified in the light of most these perspectives. As it is defined by Wayne Rosenau, a politics scientist, as "a label that is presently in vogue to account for peoples, activities, norms, ideas, goods, services, and currencies that are decreasingly confined to a particular geographic space and its own local and established methods" (1997, p. 360).
Most of the researchers focus their research on the economic impacts of globalization. It is unquestionably clear that globalization has impacted the overall economic situation of the existing world. However, the cultural, political and the areas additionally require attention as globalization has afflicted the guidelines, education, culture and overall communal structure of the states. The economic aspects of globalization are not limited to its effects on microenvironment but it has affected markets on the macro level. The microeconomic effects refer to the technological improvements and the impact at individual company levels, whereas, the macroeconomic results involve the collaborative research of market segments for business purposes (Oman, 1994).
The continuously increasing interconnection between people about the world has been seen since 1080s. Easy carry facilities and reduced transport expenses combined with the cheap transmitting of information in one location to the other have helped the earth cover and reduce distance obstacles. Furthermore immigration, technology exchanges, foreign direct investment and easy capital moves between countries are also noticed to be increasing. A lot of the states are exhibiting their involvement in understanding the impact of globalization on employment opportunities and income circulation. Folks have different views about the consequences of globalization. The optimists place more emphasis on the increasing pattern of trade and economical development. Furthermore, they hook up the increasing development of trade with overall growth and development, and also they claim that progress is towards the poor as it provides them with more job opportunities and reduction of poverty. Alternatively, the group of pessimist statements that globalization produces unconstructive counter results on the earlier confined divisions. They also claim that globalization increases marginalization of all divisions of the global current economic climate and also provides climb to inter-country income in equality. The conflicting views about globalization between these two groups also engaged the arguments about the changing fads of poverty rate. Optimist argues that globalization has helped in lowering poverty pointing towards the decreased poverty global poverty rates in the last two decades. Whereas the opposing group argues from this promise by concluding that this reduction in poverty is due to statistical artefacts and swift development of china. In addition they claim that utter poverty has shown an increasing development in a number of producing countries and comparative poverty has increased in the majority of the areas. From the above debate it isn't difficult to conclude that globalization has a broader range of topics that want attention and even more research. The number of these topics does not only involve politics, monetary, developmental and financial matters but also affect the social, cultural and environmental conditions of the whole world. The social effects of globalization include option of opportunities for the reduced amount of poverty, employment protection under the law and obligation, environmental issue, spiritual concern and so forth.
Globalization has resulted in producing easy access to products and services for the consumers who possessed problems in accessing this stuff before the spread of this notion (Evenett, 1999). In order to achieve greater sales, gains and brand, imported materials and foreign traders produce such a rates model that allures more customers and breaks the client string of local businesses. The increasingly globalized world has also helped the poorer countries and the ones with food shortages with increased option of food resources (Mander & Goldsmith, 1996). The consumers who have been earlier bound to get expensive products and equipment in limited resources credited to local monopolistic market cannot attain cheaper imported material as an alternative (Graham & Krugman, 1991). Gaunt (2002) provides evidence that poverty rates around the globe on specific and country basis has been reduced as a consequence of globalization. McDonalds provided an evidence of this globalized business framework insurance firms different franchises and branches in various parts of the world. The globalized strategy of McDonalds is to keep carefully the prices similar in all regions and the product quality uncompromised. The franchise in mind provided the evidence of uniformity in prices and quality of food along with the service quality. McDonald is specially respected because of its cheap food products at every end of the world. People, especially the working and scholar population, were seen to rely on McDonalds as their regular diet.
Estimates from experts reveal that roughly 30-40% of the global populace has used some benefits from the increasingly globalized economy. Alternatively, the remaining populace hasn't shown any such progress (Valaskakis, 1998). However, globalization is often blamed for increasing the gap between your skilled and unskilled, informed and uneducated, experienced and inexperienced, technologically proficient and the ones who are unaware of modern solutions. Increasing competition has led to increasing this gap, whereas, increased competition has led the organizations to boost their performances and have made things better for the consumers (Frank & Make, 1995). As far as the ethnographic analysis of McDonalds reveals, the claim that the difference between skilled and unskilled staff has been widened may be refuted. The managers at the local branch were more motivated to polish the staff skills and attributes by training and universities. Technologically knowledgeable people like those interacting with cash receipts and daily trades were trained for the task having relevant educational degree. Others with less certification were put for cleaning work. In the same way, people that have high communication skills and friendly frame of mind were shifted to the counters for order taking purposes and so forth. The various backgrounds of folks did not broaden the space but proposed a suitable position for each employee as per the qualities and experience (McDonalds in European countries 2007; McDonalds runs ethnic 2010; McDonalds 2010).
The impact of globalization on culture in addition has been talked about and investigated by writers in an successful way. Globalization has brought in many new changes, breakthroughs and eases for folks. It offers new information, studies and ideas to transmit in one person to the other. However, the increasing diverse human population in countries has also posed a menace with their local security. People are now facing problems of terrorism and disruption anticipated to uncivilized human population merging from their native places to other countries. The religious conflicts are one of the crucial topics that result in the disruption of laws and order situation in countries. People having different backgrounds and perceptions may create disastrous circumstances not only for themselves but also for the local residents. The extremely diverse human population is difficult to control as people can't be grouped most importantly scheduled to different point of views and conflicts on things. The residency problems are also troubling the governments in taking care of people. Insufficient food, education and direction for the foreigners aren't only affecting their own lives but native residents are also damaged by their works. In the ethnographic research of McDonalds, it was observed that the staff from French, Pakistani and British culture had different attitudes, anticipations and behaviours. Their social, moral and religious needs were different. However this diversity will not prevent those to cooperate to achieve the high quality of products and services of McDonalds.
Globalization has significant effects both negative and positive. These effects influence individual countrywide and global life of individuals, businesses and countries. The results of globalization are of immense importance and are integrated in today's world with such a propensity that it's not possible pull out its effects. The negative effects are harming the population, culture, environment and financial conditions of the world economies but it isn't possible to eliminate this idea for the good of individuals. Somehow it is becoming inseparable part of our lives. However, governments and local government bodies might take necessary steps to lesson or eliminate the unwanted effects of globalization. In addition more extensive and improved regulations may help creating an equality based mostly, impartial and socially acoustics environment for the people in the current diverse world.
It sometimes appears that increasingly nowadays the idea of globalization is distributing. It has pass on so much so that it is also seen in restaurants and day-to-day lives. Restaurants are making a graphic for themselves which is then being distributed globally to be able to increase their services. It really is seen that globalization has its root base in the concept of dispersing of certain businesses. The ethnographic research conducted by me on the organization clearly demonstrates McDonalds advantages from the concept of globalization by incorporating the diversified employees from differing backgrounds. It also features global ways of control the diversification in marketing and functional areas after launching chains in various parts of the entire world it can be obviously seen that McDonalds is very successful in reaching its aim. It has also been seen that the value chain of McDonalds has upgraded as time passes with the integration of globalization. It really is a chain of restaurant that hasn't only pass on in the developed world but in addition has distributed to the developing countries of Pakistan and India. By using globalization it sometimes appears that McDonalds has been able to distributed its root and provide the positives of globalization to the whole world. New job opportunities have been created for the people in these expanding nations. It was evidently seen that McDonalds comes after the plans of globalization in its working environment which has helped it to move towards success. The culture of globalization along with its theories is relevant to the working environment of McDonalds. These ideas of globalization have been assessed and related to the framework of McDonalds formerly (McDonalds 2010).
