The Curriculum of Montessori

As educators our role is to instruct children through curriculum. Over time many different types of curriculum have been created. Curriculum is defined as the training programs, activities, institution subjects, materials, plans, and issues of research (Arce). The Montessori Method was set up over 100 yrs. back and continues to be found in some form in today's class rooms. It is commonly associated using its popular child-size furniture in the class room, but there is much more to Montessori Method as I am going to discuss information later.

The Montessori Method was made in Rome, Italy by Dr. Montessori in 1907. During this time period period in the first 1900's the normal age group of children to get started on attending institution was 6 yrs old. This get older was determined predicated on the child's capacity to walk and understand, or "therefore regarded intelligent enough to go to university" (Montessori, The Times of Growth). However, in the 1930's physiologists identified that children become receptive to mature influences between the age groups of 3-6 (Montessori, The Durations of Expansion). Just as it is known today children have a hypersensitive period for development and during this time it is more beneficial (Montessori, Education For Life). The Montessori Method evolved the emphasis then from how to teach children to meet up with the needs of the world, and give attention to the child using their company delivery (Montessori, Education For Life).

Under the Montessori Method the instructors' task that was to "the very first thing to be done, therefore is to discover the true nature of a child and then assist him in his normal development" (Arce). That is achieved through different regions of learning; Practical

Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Terminology and Literacy, Cultural Subjects, and Creative Content (ICME ). In most Montessori Schools the kids are in vertical age ranges 2 years to 6 years, 6 to 9 years, 12 to 15 years, and 15 to 18 years (ICME ). The exercises of functional life teach the children the value of keeping a clean environment, cooking and the practical skills of buttoning, sewing, and lacing (ICME ).

Next is the Sensorial, the training of the senses. That is regarded as one of more import lessons and is targeted on children with special needs as well as "typical" children. The materials used are didactic materials and give special needs children opportunities to learn through the senses and it provokes auto-education in "typical" children (Montessori, Education of the Senses ). Exercises within this technique include children understanding how to recognize the variations in dimensions by assorting various sizes and shapes of blocks (Montessori, Education of the Senses ). When a child selects the incorrect size they can be forced to improve it themselves. Once the child has accomplished this exercise with this specific material they then have outgrown it (Montessori, Education of the Senses ).

The third area is Mathematics. The materials children used in mathematics are similar materials compared to that of which are used in sorting. In mathematics the materials are color coded rods, pegs and nearly whatever can be sorted or counted (Montessori, Teaching of Numeration; Introduction to Arithmetic ).

The fourth area is words and literacy. Within the Montessori curriculum the writing is focused on understanding how to get lines and forms that eventually lead to the kids writing

(Montessori, Options for the Coaching of Reading and Writing ). Another exercise to instruct writing skills will involve the children tracing the letters through materials. One lessons I found interesting was created for children to correct themselves by using sandpaper externally of the notice (Montessori, Description of the Method and Didactic Materials Used ). In teaching children literacy they start with vowels and then constanants to teach letter acknowledgement. The emphasis is on the sounds they make and pictures of object like the phonics system today (Montessori, Options for the Teaching of Reading and Writing ).

The fifth area is Social subjects. In the event that you notice most Montessori academic institutions are in conditions with nature area. Children have the ability to connect with aspect by taking an active role in its care.

The previous area is Creative subjects such as arts and craft, theatre, music and activity. In skill children should draw anything that pops to their minds. Looking at other creative materials, children receive the independence to explore with clay and color materials. Music was another way for a child to express themselves. With the Montessori Method the children create their own instruments as well as music (Montessori, Education of the Senses ).

In order for the Montessori Method to be effective in a class that induces self-teaching and the flexibility to move round the course and centers freely discipline is necessary. Self-discipline is trained to children through exercise, these exercises show children instead of verbally commanding them to be quiet but still. Children learn these different activities by

sitting and getting up quietly, tip toeing and the use of objects silently, and other exercises (Montessori, Basic Review of Willpower ).

Montessori curriculum has advantages and disadvantage in comparisons to traditional classrooms. Inside a Montessori classrooms children are allowed and encouraged to experiment uninterrupted in centers for up to 3 hours opposed to a traditional school room where the child sits at their seat a majority of the day and the teacher facilitates the lesson or they are only allowed an allotted time in centers. The educators are to mainly take notice of the children and let them train themselves and not force the child to learn. However, the cons of Montessori curriculum are they don't follow traditional level scales, but carry out evaluations throughout the school yr (ICME ). Finally, the name Montessori isn't legitimately protected, so classes and the training they provide can vary and might not exactly represent Montessori Methods (International Montessori Index). Whatever the curriculum educators choose it continues to be necessary for them change the curriculum to the needs of the students.
