The Color Purple is compiled by the famous Afro-American girl copy writer Alice Walker. She won the Pulitzer Award for fiction in 1983. The novel was modified for film in 1984 by Spielberg and this film helped bring her a world wide popularity and reputation. The film reveals the struggle of the primary character, Celie, an unhealthy uneducated black girl who finds her individuality and self-reliance as a dark woman despite her hardships. Inside the film, there are several symbolic features denoting certain meanings, which will be the color crimson, God, letters, slacks, etc. All of them symbolizes a particular period of Celie's life that displays her sufferings and survivals. In this newspaper, I mainly discuss the symbolic need for the color purple.
Key words: symbolic significance, the color crimson, Alice Walker
Colors can communicate emotions and feelings, so that writers have a tendency to use color to modeling top features of the individuals. So is Alice Walker. She uses different colors to express different thoughts of the key figure Celie in the reserve The Color Purple. For instance, blue, red, dark-colored and the most crucial one the color crimson, these colors all have special meanings. In the next I'll mainly discuss that.
The title of the film can be an important symbol. Inside the western, Purple symbolizes elegance, authority and dignity. At the beginning of the story, Celie will not wear crimson clothes, which implies that she's not got freedom and personal- identity. With Shug's help, Celie starts to make a living by herself, gets freedom on economy. She creates Folks Pants Unlimited Company, and then makes trousers for one of her sisters, Sofia. She chooses red and crimson in the shorts, which shows that Celie starts to get dignity. By the end of the storyline, embellished with red and purple, she offers her own house and gets anything she likes to adorn her room. The changing of colors suggests that, faced with the near future, she becomes optimistic towards life. Albert, the husband of Celie, has carved a crimson frog to her as a gift. It denotes the reputation for Celie, the equality of dark-colored women and men, and the admiration that the dark-colored women get back.
Meanwhile, purple stands for homosexuality. When dark women are oppressed and have no to make level of resistance, homosexuality is a means to allow them to develop their own life-style. Inspired by the tradition, it is also the cultural extension of dark women. In order to reduce men' s control, women should become a member of together, caring themselves, and loving one another. Only in this way can they become strong and freedom, which contributes to gaining their home- identity.
In the storyplot, it is Shug's love that helps Celie to reconstruct herself physically and emotionally. Before she comes, Celie lives on her behalf faraway sister pessimistically. All the changes take place when she meets Shug, a kindhearted woman full of assurance. Shug has a reputation as a woman of dubious morals who dresses scantily, has some sort of "nasty girl disease, " and is also left behind by her parents. However, Celie gradually gets something more in Shug. When she talks about Shug's photos, she is fascinated by Shug' s unique appearance which telephone calls up the memory of her mother. With their marriage developing, Shug requires the jobs of mom, sister, lover, and good friend. She enlightens Celie to understand the secret of body and sexuality. Presenting her a sense of belonging, Shug promotes her to fight for self-reliance and freedom. The main is, it is Shug who frees Celie from old ideas. Affected by Shug, Celie gets a brand new understanding of God. She thinks that God means nature, and he stands for human's identity. After that, Celie starts to shoot for freedom, equality and dignity to be a woman. After many years for making efforts, Celie makes the property that is rightfully hers and becomes 3rd party. She achieves rebirth. On a regular basis she prospers, Alert, her husband, falls slope. He loses his will alive, becomes an alcoholic, and almost dies. He survives, becomes friends with Celie, and helps her with her sewing. It turns out that he has for years kept Nettie's words to Celie. The moment Celie is informed; she extremely bursts out killing her husband. Beneath the guide of Shug, she gives up revenging and commences to feel happy for realizing that Nettie has been fine all the years, hitched to the missionary after his better half dies. Celie reads Nettie's characters and starts to writes to her. Then she learns that the missionary's two children are followed, and are actually Celie' s blood and flesh. They keep coming back from Africa and reunite with Celie. Eventually, being a happy and unbiased female, Celie gets a crimson dress symbolizing style and dignity.
Throughout THE COLOUR Purple, there is no sexuality between Celie and Shug. In turn, filled with warmness, they care for one another and gradually grow self- awareness. As for Walker, though he does not speak highly of homosexuality, it's the female romance that help Celie get rid of the miserable condition. Celie, who has been enslaved by her spouse for several years, is thirsty for the pure relationship between black women. Fortunately, it is essential on her behalf to pursue an unbiased life. By the end of the storyplot, with Mr. _ continuously taking care of Celie, her tendency of homosexuality has little by little decreased. After that, Celie believes that she can also be happy without Shug. Eventually, she creates a harmony connection with her husband and leads a happy life.
Apparently, under the dominance of men, women have to become listed on together to fight against men's oppression. Walker portrays feminine homosexuality as a means for women to summon the courage to inform stories. These reviews permit them to fight oppression and men's dominance. Relationships among women form a refuge, providing reciprocal love in a global filled up with male assault.
Putting The Color Purple as the name, Walker seeks to creating the social position of dark-colored women, even motivates them to get the dignity of emperor. For the denotation of crimson itself, it symbolizes dark-colored women's self-reliance and dignity. Once Celie gets self- identity, she might well have the to enjoy the crimson, her most favoring color.
