My understanding of the modern culture I stay in changes from daily. When Obama was elected, I had great hopes because of this country and that racial equality would finally balance and this old prejudices would fade away - African american people would progress careers, everyone would be similar, and the Democrats would care for us and ensure that my parents and their parents get a fair deal within America. I had unrealistic expectations, like the majority of young people. I did so not realize that the overall economy would decrease so quickly. But I've the encouragement of my family and cathedral, to forge ahead and attain my goals.

We are local Suirnamese people, South American, and my descendants are Indian. My parents helped bring me to America whenever i was four years of age. I am nineteen years. Since I am fully Americanized and have grown up in the us, I've never experienced immigrant prejudice; my skin is light and I have no accent. I'd have to label myself in the American population as a young girl adult.

I see myself in population as a young female trying to maintain with other females who are judged on their ability to look good, wear the right hairstyles that are modern-day, screen stylish accessories and clothing on a daily basis, and keep carefully the figure because excessive fat people are discriminated against, openly, whatever age they are simply. This population is health conscious, weight mindful, clothes conscious, designed brand conscious, body pamper conscious, sex mindful, and materialistic. I see myself as having to keep up with other females my age group; if not, I am excluded from public occurrences and activities that enjoy prominence in my own community. EASILY don't have the right clothes for chapel benefits and extra-curricular activities in my sociable network, I am not accepted in to the group which is a zero tolerance situation as far as young females are concerned. With regard from what is expected of me by other females, and how I see my very own self-image, it is easier to go along with my peers and stay competitive with them, then it is to drop from the sociable network, become an outsider rather than be accepted by my age group.

In order to stay popular, well-liked and trusted by my peers, I must maintain the correct appearance so i remain position quo with the other young feminine adults who desire to become informed, successful and financially secure.

There's no chance to deny the importance of high beauty criteria in this country, today. One cannot change away from billboards, television advertising, magazine pages, publication clips, or even video gaming that perpetuate the slender, perfect body with perfect long fingernails - gorgeous mane and make-up and captivating clothes that are clingy and revealing. There's no way to move away from the broadcasts about fats Americans and European dislike for fat Americans; and all over the place you turn, you can find someone behind you that appears like Madonna or anybody of a large number of perfect role models blinking in the multimedia. They are ethnical heroes and their femininity is no more denied. I guess that in order to rule the globe, a woman must be a Barbie doll so that she'll gain attention from men - even if she does not have the brains to go with it. Perhaps that is the message that girls and advertisers are interacting in the 21st hundred years. Furthermore, since population is so establish on stressing the value of a skinny body and a stunning face, it is not a delight that eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia to get over the female concern with becoming extra fat are increasing today (Media's Effect on Young ladies, 2009, 1-4). They may be what they consume, which is eradicating them.

Coming to America when I was four years of age was a significant culture shock for my parents, however, not for me personally. My mom never realized that female beauty could be so concentrated in exacted suggestions and standardized measurements as it is here now in America. It is most puzzling how American women can subject matter themselves to such a biased standard of configuration. In my own country of source, Suriname, women are appreciated for their individuality and natural allure and beauty. We don't have a typical look of "fashion beauty" nor do we feel obligated or condemned to a life of replicating that which you see in newspapers. Although we do have fads, as all countries do, our maturity lends to specific styles that are socially acceptable and respected. There is no need for fake imaging to gain social popularity. However, this is the country my parents, grandparents and descendants grew up in. Over the years when i was growing up, my parents understood that they had to furnish me with everything my classmates got; merely to keep me from being bullied by classmates.

Apparently, the impact of advertising in America is so persuasive that women cannot relate to themselves unless they emulate their level stars and media stereotypes. Female appearance is central in America, and corresponding to Dr. Smith, professor of Marketing at the University or college of Wisconsin, "advertisements with female models are usually for appearance-related products, and by enough time women reach adolescence, they redefine their image and envision their futures" (Advertising Images of Women, 1997, 2). Thus, advertising and media supports send text messages that could limit their aspirations, undermine their do it yourself worth and endanger their health. Example: body-pampering with soaps and shampoos that show sweetheart (thin sweetheart) in the bathtub, with long beautiful locks, perfect measurements and perfect everything. Then she steps into an attractive little dress that she could not wear until she signed up with Jenny Craig and lost 25 pounds of unwanted weight. Now she actually is perfect, satisfactory, and clothes she is putting on can be purchased at a Wal-Mart and the skinny body can be bought at Jenny Craig Diet Center, and the hair shampoo and soap can be purchased from any local discount store. So the promoters are happy, the stars are wealthy, and the feminine viewers is frowning because she can't wear the thin little dress because she hasn't lost enough weight to fit into a size 5.

The emphasis on female appearance says American females they are under great pressure to be skinny. Alternatively, this tells boys and men that ladies are said to be, above everything else, a pretty and perfect deal and "something to behold, " however, not necessarily to respect (Advertising Images of Ladies, 1997, 2).

All I could hope to complete as a woman adult is to squeeze in, get education and profession, not count on marriage to fulfill my id, and keep an in depth affiliation with my cathedral and community.
