Self-handicapping Habit with Decker and Mitchell's Theory

Introduction

As a part of initial few assignments, I took the group of self- handicapping survey suggested and designed by Prof. Phillip Decker and Prof. Jordan Mitchell to look for the self-handicapping behavior during general work situation, people management, and command role, and recognized the features and knowledge that I have to acquire, learn and practice to be a good team member and leader. But after studying specific chapters based on identifying self-handicapping situation and behaviors relating to key managerial and leadership role such as accountability, tunnel eyesight, engagement, analysis and decision making; I've identified a lot more areas in my own professional and personal life that i was rehearsing and was having myself back, making excuses and creating hurdles for myself, about that i wasn't aware of. Some triggers for handicapping act like the earlier findings of self evaluation exercise like poor listening habit and low self-confidence, and some of them I wasn't aware of.

I think about this as a chance or blessing in disguise, as an international pupil and furthermore for a person planning for a career shift, assessing my strengths and weakness, deciding the behavioral aspects and personal strategy techniques that handicap my improvement honestly, at this time of energy is very pivotal. Today as well, I find myself looking for excuses to this mentioned shift after i hardly understand anything or I am unable to achieve the desired results and additionally create hurdles for myself which really impacts my learning process adversely. So, during the course of this report I will be discussing my activities and behaviors which i now understand as self-handicapping my professional development and learning path regarding most relevant and related key managerial areas; accountability, tunnel eye-sight, engagement, evaluation and decision making; devising a company action plan to slowly and slowly but surely incorporate a small, positive and long lasting behavioral change in professional and personal lifestyle.

Reading through the four book chapters, I needed the brief self-assessment review in the self-handicapping reserve by Dr. Phillip Decker and Dr. Jordan Mitchell to identify key management and command areas out of the four that I must say i need to concentrate on to bring around positive change in personal and professional way following the recommendations and baby steps pointed out in the e book.

At the beginning of the career, I had been more focused on caring for my responsibility and wasn't concerns about the accountability part or maybe in those days I didn't know the difference between being liable and responsible in the true sense. It got me time to learn the meaning of accountability through a fair share of bad and the good experiences and bit of mentoring, now I am aware that personal accountability is approximately understanding and acknowledging the task, taking actions to achieve agreed-upon results, answering and taking possession of the results obtained, regardless of the outcome.

In the reserve "The Oz Process: Getting Results Through Person And Organizational Accountability" authors Roger Connors and Tom Smith described personal accountability as, "making an individual choice to go up above one's circumstances and illustrate the ownership essential for obtaining desired results; to see it, own it, solve it and do it. Going through the section and associated with my professional experience and management tasks, I recognized that I have already been self-handicapping myself by not prioritize responsibilities based on the significance, staying away from accountability and in confronting peers, manager and customers sometimes, and most essentially due to insufficient self-confidence not taking difficult duties and tasks which really dented my profession development and learning curve. In a group task or in a control role, I discover that sometimes I procrastinate and put stress on myself, teammates and subordinate. Also lacking to determine the assignments and task limitations which tend to overlap and create confusions; moreover most of the days I find myself doing the majority of the correction works for my subordinates somewhat than taking care of resources which in the end, sets more pressure on me playing as the person who is in charge and accountable. The key skills that I need to work on to be able to progress is always to reduce and get rid of the fear of accountability; plan, learn and improve self-efficacy.

I avoid asking my senior/ employer regarding work related issues and try to find solutions by myself.

Due to lack of knowledge and self-confidence, I procrastinate and put stress on my teammates. Also I try to find the answers to what I don't know myself or seek advice from a peer and the resultant of the way sometime works in the favour of the team and at times effects the task timelines.

3. Find mentors and learn from their experience and knowledge.

4. Engage myself in constructive and supportive managerial/ authority activities to increase do it yourself efficacy.

5. Do something to set-up positive environment to promote free moving ideas and exchange knowledge on management related subject matter.

6. Break-down the difficult duties into smaller meaning parts, so that I gain self confidence in reaching those goals and increase self-efficacy, aim at mastery concluding sophisticated, challenging and autonomous careers.

Rather just hide or do my old job

Due to insufficient knowledge on work related subject matter and conservative character, I often don't take part voluntary or optional work related task for professional growth, like workshop & training and during a business demonstration or conference, I usually remain at the area or by the end to avoid conversation and responding to to a question.

Due to my traditional nature, I've become really restrictive, I be reluctant to share ideas or constructive dialogues with the team basically. Sometimes feel left out in an organization meeting.

Improve the general public image and socialize, in order that they discover me and my ideas. Make a positive image for me personally amongst folks around to remember.

Not having peers accountable

There have been many instances in my own managerial profession that during job performance analysis, my subordinates often respond to accountability questions by 'they weren't aware of the standards', even though I put stated to them in the initial project level.

Self Deception

Such situation put too much pressure on myself with respect to the team to get the things done, and at times locates myself getting things done for my subordinates and peers merely to meet the task timeline.

Deliberate Action

Design proactive approach on job accountability for the subordinates and peers. Discuss and communicate with them before finalizing, and file them.

1. Hold an everyday morning meeting with the team to examine performance and discuss what needs to be done and exactly how, so that peers can suggest better advice to complete specific tasks, prioritize and assign workload with sensible timelines and established accountability goals. Include buffer in the program to accommodate surprising events.

2. Make daily reaching take note of or place a white board for every person to see, on which process timeline with an responsible person is brought up, and is modified every morning following the assembly.

3. Publicly recognize peer and subordinate performance.

4. Arranged daily personal activity and take note of them down based on the priorities.

A good indicator of this change is always to examine peers and subordinates the task related strategy and behavioral change in the daily day. If I consider the things not improving, have an exclusive talk with the person and try to understand his perspective.

Instead of annual performance review, have a regular or quarterly review, to assess the performance, and right them if required.

Most of the behavioral changes are focused on bettering self-efficacy and regaining self confidence to complete difficult duties and face new obstacles.

  • Arrive at another meeting/ school before time and prepare for it respectively. I been told an interesting way of time management from a third person who 'Reaching a gathering 5 mins early is being on time and reaching promptly means you're later. ', I'll try to put into action this school of thought.
  • Be humble and genuine in recognizing my shortcomings. Enhance my understanding for the respective, seek assistance and motivate myself in questioning and inspecting regarding the unidentified.
  • Start writing an everyday diary to self-analysis, 'what I've achieved and lost throughout the day, and draw positive incidents and their results. '
  • Try to incorporate small positive behavioral change around my daily routine, like reading, writing and meditating.

Resultant of the activities would be:

  • I would feel positive when I walk into a gathering or course.
  • The want to learn and improve would motivate and drive me to accept my shortcomings and touch base people to conquer them.
  • I would be better able to identify positive and negative behavior, devise an individual action arrange for them.
  • Incorporating small behavioral change around daily routine would soon become a habit and can have a positive impact.
  • Tunnel Eye-sight:

Reading through the section and relating it to my previous professional and limited managerial experience, I consider tunnel eyesight as one key self-handicapping factor that professionals and professional face as a hurdle in the development and more importantly remain unaware relating to this shortcoming. We always ask our personal why aren't we getting a promotion and your partner is, even though I have more knowledge and experience, now I understand that the explanation for it is tunnel perspective. The very best management talks about the individual from various measurements but the most significant and important some may be they see if the person takes into account the larger picture and complete goals when getting close smaller tasks, their understanding of what is taking place beyond the limitations of our own particular job, team or organization. We need to avoid blindness in relation to information, inner and external environment, and understand the fine line between company vision and tunnel eyesight.

During the action plan and baby steps, I would be primarily focused on improving my hearing, writing and networking skills to open myself up to new idea and experience which would assist in the longer run. Implementing a behavioral change around my routine schedule, so that they slowly and gradually and latterly become long lasting and a positive change.

I consider myself as not a good copy writer, and always try to avoid or take too much time doing it. I make an effort to mask my shortcomings and engage myself other non-related pursuits like social multimedia to avoid the duty at hand.

Apprehension

In an organization project setting, anticipated to my habits and I tend to put too much pressure on myself by procrastinating things, which is later transferred to other associates, resulted will there be is a hassle to meet up with the project timeline and often we have bargain on the results.

Face it

I need to give attention to building my self-confidence and writing ability. I have to face my dread and take baby steps to convert my weakness into power. Timely manage might work to effectively and proficiently get the required results.

1. Get out of my safe place and accept myself for change.

Ignoring people after get the way

At times, I find myself a lot into things that we blind side myself by not hearing to what others have to say or suggest and what's taking place around me.

Self Deception

Due to my introvert dynamics, I restrict myself to new ideas from my peers and subordinate, create a notion about them without knowing their report and thoughts; which really results my potential to tackle them during an assignment and after also. Resultant of the impacts group cohesion and potential to attain better and positive team work.

Look and Listen

One of the reason why which i self-analyzed during the initial assignments that I am wii listener and have low self-esteem which greatly effects my people connections. So my prime objective would be to improve my verbal and non-verbal communication ways to gain self-confidence.

1. Practice being fortitude during a chat and discussion.

2. Divert my full concentration and attention to the speaker also to what they say. Avoid distraction from the surrounding.

3. Clear my mind, try to imagine what the speaker is discussing and not leap to conclusions.

4. Respect the person speaking and their ideas. Contain the need to ask pointless questions and learn the artwork of supportive questioning through taking support from mentors and reading articles predicated on it. Monitor my self-talk.

5. Figure out how to use and interpret non-verbal communication through reading and watching the people and encircling.
