Are people delivered with management skills and management characteristics? Or is this something an individual develops with experience? They are some questions that contain often troubled me throughout the latter part of my undergraduate level, a confused stage in my life, where I got in a fix deciding easily should follow my Masters in general management or gain working experience. My children and peers were instrumental in giving me the required encouragement in directing me towards my job goals. Despite the fact that I wasn`t able materialize onto it right after graduation, I somehow believed that a reasonable amount of commercial exposure would teach me the skills and present me the useful knowledge, I needed to tread the road of an entrepreneur.
Building up on my academic backdrop, I've completed my Bachelors in Arts & Communication from Christ School, India where I specialised in Journalism, Mindset and Optional English. Being one of the top ranked universities in India, I not only received a solid academic foundation but also a program to build up myself holistically. Immediately after my graduation I used my first job at Aviva (UK`S largest insurance company) outsourced to Bangalore. To start with I was offered the role of a Electric motor Insurance Sales/Customer Service Consultant. This environment provided me a hands-on experience in getting together with customers in the united kingdom, advertising insurance products & services tailor made to the client needs with a high degree of customer experience.
Professional achievements measured through my performance, initiatives and duties, (in 15 a few months), raised me to the position of an even 2 Cases Analyst: a role that involved significant amounts of responsibility/dispute handling, decision making, negotiation with lawyers/brokers, fraud investigation, resolution and settlement deal. After 24 months of handling this responsibility, I made a career move into a far more challenging and worthwhile role by means of a Business Analyst (Credits/Selections) for the speedily growing software large Oracle, Inc.
With five years of experience, my understanding about organizations and my role as an individual has grown leaps and bounds. I have gained insight into how organizations function, the hierarchical framework & the value of Customer experience. The creative marketing strategies multinational companies utilize to improve sales and the impact marketing has on its audience, inspires me to launch my own company someday. Who wouldn't like to be their own employer in a corporation thriving on new creative ideas, making significant amounts of money?
Keeping my dreams within my reach, and also to make it attainable one day, I needed to start out focusing on those goals and getting all the training possible. I in some way felt the need to collect all my working knowledge, along with theories that gives me insight, help me develop my skills, and create a strong base for managerial duties in the future. Seeking an MBA, especially within an international agreement would give me the platform to connect to people from very diverse civilizations, share guidelines, backgrounds and ideologies. It would give me a broader perspective of how market segments function internationally and help me get the learning I have to enhance my capabilities, thus providing a solid foundation to build a promising career. Most importantly it will equip me with the abilities that will prepare me to take on bigger assignments and greater challenges in an corporation. Thus a strong blend between functional knowledge, behavioural habits at the job and learning on management things, would help me set up my very own business someday and turn my wish into simple fact.
Through my interactions with people who have completed an MBA and business owners who have made their vision a reality, I've learned that Management is an ocean that can't be crossed in a year or on completion of the program. It really is a constant learning process through various activities we encounter on the daily basis, how we deal with situations and how exactly we counter problems. You'll find so many hurdles we are likely to face, in our journey, you start with how exactly we complete given responsibilities, projects, what approaches we use to learn, how exactly we control our time effectively etc. It is therefore important that we do some introspection to see if we've the necessary skills to tackle these problems, if not focus on the required strategies and plans to counter these issues effectively. The ability to deal with these problems effectively would depend on experiences got in the past and the training produced from it. "It really is vitally important to comprehend the nature of the situation and define it properly before arranging about resolving it. " (Linstead et al. 2004)
Preparing because of this assignment acquired me thinking into aspects that i normally would have not thought about. It required me to invest time introspecting and inspecting my entire life in more detail. An interesting final result could be attracted from performing a SWOT analysis to determine what factors are likely to hinder my improvement from doing the MBA and most of all my strategies towards dealing with them. This has opened my eyes to a lot of issues that will probably hinder my progress from doing the MBA successfully.
Firstly focusing on my academic background with seventeen many years of education I've possessed in India, where the learning was more theoretical. Content were taught in course, handouts given, specific text messages were followed according to the curriculum. Learning was measured through term testing, mid-term and final examinations where we had to memorize chapters and reproduce information through answers to specific questions asked. This was completely a new methodology compared to the education system in the UK which is more of an practical approach to learning. We are expected to refer multiple books, publications, article etc. from libraries or electronic databases. Moreover, we are marked on assessments and presentations which is way different to the Indian system. This difference would require myself to quickly change my method of preparation and learning.
Secondly I have a bit more than five many years of work experience. Getting back again to academics after a long break appears to be the biggest concern I`m currently confronted with. I haven't done any reading, other than the newspaper, in the last couple of years. Thus lack of concentration and emphasis, could possibly lead to insufficient preparation, leading to assignments being undone until the very last second. This may indirectly impact the quality of information published and ultimately lower grades. Another thing that will go against my favour is the fact that I makes short drafts primarily before a final version is scripted. This appears to be a very monotonous and frustrating job, even though advancements in quality and content can be guaranteed. Limited reading habits do not help me in examining from wider perspectives and from pondering from the box.
My time management skill is not at all something I can boast of. I often see myself putting forward things to in the future or before very end. Prioritizing on minimal considerations gets me more sidetracked than often. For eg. Instead of reading on related subject areas pertaining to assignments, I`d probably be involved in communal networking sites or music/movie sites on the internet. With regards to writing my assignment or reading, I quickly lose interest and discover it difficult to spark that inspiration again.
I need to boost my understanding on the Harvard system of referencing, because problems of not referencing or citing correctly could bring about unintentional plagiarism. Despite the fact that I am a self-assured communicator, however Personally i think that sometimes I can present in a much more effective manner. Wider reading could broaden knowledge about them and improve vocabulary. Besides development and practice in PowerPoint and excel could improvise the effectiveness of presentation. This will give a know-how to balance aspects of presentation by keeping it sharp to the timelines, yet have a enduring effect on an audience, and much more consistently.
In the past, at school, I would just read or memorize specific issues for the sake of examinations and credit score good levels. Here it was more of theoretical and specific learning that was used. Later at the graduate level, learning was by way of a combo of lectures, talk with peers, theoretical and specific of sorts. Very soon things were a little different within my work place where learning was through multi-media presentations, on the job training, sharing activities or guidelines, building professional associations, etc. I've had a very straightforward approach to learning and what was important was that I designed to the several learning styles regarding to changing environments and situation. The majority of my learning on tackling situations and handling problems has been predicated on past encounters, what I discovered from those situations, what their benefits were, etc. Pondering on those activities may probably make me take a look at things from different perspectives. If possibly something didn't go too well the prior time I have not been skeptical to try out something not used to find out if this works out, not forgetting to mention that I do some amount of brainstorming before pulling to conclusions. I feel it is best to consider all options at hand before drawing conclusions or taking action for problem resolving.
(Linstead etal. 2004) cites (Dark brown and Duguid 1991) by declaring that learning in organizing is not for problem solving alone but targeted towards improving romantic relationships whenever people take up to respond in an structured way. He suggests that this procedure for learning to relate with circumstances is a kind of 'situated learning' among communities who practice this process, in comparison to those who do individual and isolated learning. However specific understanding how to me has been beneficial to understand problems comprehensive giving further understanding. This knowledge broadens my point of view to come up with various possible resolution methods from ideas. Learning styles defers from individual to individual. It is a preferred method a person uses to learn a theory and strategy, which is best suited for them and this could leave a enduring effect. To me learning style builds up from past theoretical experiences and also from your personal characteristics. For e. g. whenever i was more youthful I put in place theoretical methods to learning and it for certain worked for me personally. WHEN I grew older strategies were different as learning was through different situation and problems I experienced be it at work or in my personal life.
Kolb`s experiential learning circuit to a great scope relates to the training style and methodology I have utilized in days gone by. From the words of David A. Kolb, he expresses that learning cycles normally focus on some concrete experience. Out of this we examine on the problem, through some reflective observations. This gives us alternatives to get conclusions, as to what occurred in the same situation recently and what strategy was used to counter it. If we were successful we look at it as learning experience. On the other hand if it did not go too well, we have a tendency to reflect back again and lay down explanations why things turned just how they did. However, it is inevitable that you envision into aspects that can have probably preserved you work or time, regardless of the actual fact that it was successful or not. That is known as abstract conceptualization. Thus we might pull conclusions and take up shorter and far better methods to in the end implement actions to give you the desired end result, which is the fourth stage of the routine called Dynamic experimentation. This whole process thus creates a fresh experience which becomes learning unless situations change. Kolb also says that these levels not necessarily need to be used in the given order. This learning style is significantly employed by organizations for problem dealing with and finding.
A diagrammatic representation below shows Kolb`s experiential learning cycle.

Even though I connect meticulously to Kolb`s experiential learning, contrasting views is seen in the 'International Journal of Lifelong Education' by Miettenen (2000) where he expresses that the model employs different ideologies and principles from various resources. However these concepts are explained without sufficient mention of the background literature. Therefore he says these principles stay ambiguous and varied interpretations. Another interesting truth by Smith (2001) 'David. A. Kolb on Experiential Leaning', the encyclopaedia of Casual education. (Retrieved: 06 April 2011) from http://www. infed. org/biblio/b-explrn. htm is that even though learning is considered to be damaged by environments, Kolb combines contexts from different options, irrespective of the limited ethnicities they come from and experience they have had, hence making it an extremely subjective theory.
Reading from numerous sources, inspecting and introspecting with relevant solutions has given climb to a repertoire of thoughts towards techniques that I could possible use to enhance future learning and skills to counter problems effectively. With different methodologies in learning, especially with the standards being higher in a Masters degree, preparing for this task has sparked in new ideas to approaches I could implement.
In this task I have protected aspects that have experienced certain relevance in my life. Even though I possibly could not conclude my approach to learning through an individual methodology, however a couple of theories got elements highly relevant to practices i follow. Even though there is absolutely no concrete research or criticism to evaluate whether a technique is right or incorrect, I really believe positives from other theories can perhaps help me to learn better and enhance my problem solving skills.
