The Internet. What it did for me educational and scholastically is nothing at all short of a miracle. While using recent events of the past 3 years I couldn't have possibly even imagined that I could get a college education and a qualification in accounting without the use of the Internet. I am old enough to keep in mind life prior to the INTERNET. I remember hearing that term in the early days; the internet. I couldn't even know what they were talking about. The web; what's that? Personal computers inside our homes; that can't be possible? Or could it? It was possible and it does come to cross. Along with the world has been forever changed because of it.
My story starts as I deal with the age of forty-nine and make a monumental decision to come back to college. I thought to myself, "You need to be crazy. " But with the unrest and dissatisfaction with my then current work situation, college made sense. But still, with the very thought of working regular, and I mean regular, it was a daunting task that I possessed place before me. The actual fact that I proved helpful in a creation environment, did the trick rotating shifts, weekends, and put in somewhere within fifty to sixty hours per week, made attending university through normal channels very unrealistic. The thoughts dancing in my go to go back to school started in that summer months of 2007. I had been very disappointed with my job and with my bosses and got contemplated many times to just walk out the door. It was my partner who offered me the right advice and said, "If you're so unhappy, quit complaining and whining about your position and do something about it. " She was absolutely right. So on Saturday August 18, 2007 on the last day of show up registration at Illinois Central School in Peoria, Illinois my wife said, "Let's go" and off we proceeded to go. We arrived at the registration office at 1:45 p. m. with only fifteen minutes prior to the office closed. A wonderful girl helped me get documented within those previous fifteen minutes of registration and my quest was going to begin. I enrolled in three classes that show up, two were Internet classes and one was a correspondence course. One must realize that I had got no college experience in my own life also to start out with just Internet classes was just a little unnerving. So equipped with a newfound conviction and an extremely supportive wife, my journey into the mysterious realm of Internet education initiated.
My first foray into a web class was a real eye opener. My first class was an English composition school. I hadn't written a formal paper in thirty years and here I used to be necessary to write an article using MLA to cite my referrals. What on earth was MLA? So, to the Internet I gone and have a Google search of MLA, and I was off and operating and I haven't ended yet. THE WEB has shown to be such an very helpful source for doing school work, particularly when it involves writing papers. The amount of commitment saved by doing online research is just incomprehensible. A couple of things come to mind when I think about this first semester of university is that it might haven't been accomplished without the Internet; the time to really take the lessons and enough time to spend on research for writing projects. Neither might have been accomplished without the web. Working fifty plus hours a week like I did didn't leave enough time to devote to going to college or university, but with the advancement of classes on the web it has become a reality for me personally.
The convenience associated with taking online courses is merely fantastic. For instance, when I proved helpful afternoon turn, I'd go back home around eleven o'clock p. m. , go to my office at home space and do school work on the computer until about two or three each day.
A advantage if the web to me is the overall flexibility it gives in not only time but environment. For instance we were actually in a position to go on a short holiday and I possibly could still maintain contact with my school fill. I needed a laptop with us and through the use of Wi-Fi; I could connect no matter where we were at but still do my home work, take quizzes and keep maintaining rate with my course and not fall behind. It was great and I could really relax when I acquired done with the school work. Again the web is a great advantage and tool and one which I really do not neglect or gently.
I was always under the misconception that I possibly could not go back to school and earn a diploma so long as I worked a complete time job. Boy was I wrong about that. Using the advent of the Internet everything has modified. There are no more time constraints, forget about geographical restraints, no more anything. It is all at your fingertips anytime of the day or night time.
This had not been the first time that I possessed contemplated going back to college. In the later nineteen-eighties I used to be facing long layoffs and the real probability of dropping my job. I considered heading back to school in those days to pursue a qualification but with a wife and a baby and the fact that my partner didn't work, I couldn't afford never to work and go to university full time. I did so consider heading to school in your free time but with all the current family obligations and what not, I spoken myself out of doing it then because I couldn't start to see the light shining at the end of the tunnel. I simply couldn't start to see the end only today's long highway to make it happen. That was the second biggest mistake of my entire life. The first one being not going to school right out of senior high school. After employed in the metallic industry for thirty years I am finally paying for my decision to avoid going to college or university right after high school, in lieu of a good salary. Hindsight is an excellent thing.
Back in 1988 there were no Internet classes to have, so the only choice was to go to school personally and that does take time. Time I didn't have or time I didn't want to devote to this end. Ah, to be young and stupid.
One of the many challenges that we faced was in my second semester whenever i needed my first accounting key category online. That had not been a nice experience. I had been definitely obtaining a C in the category with one test to travel. The teacher made things even harder for me when he altered the rules in the middle of the semester. Whenever we started the category the online checks allowed you to go back and work problems if you skipped them. But for some reason, unbeknownst to me, he made a decision to make it so if you approved a question you couldn't go back. If you were stuck on a problem then you'd a choice to make. Either you shifted and missed the question or you stayed on the current problem and in my opinion, waste valuable time that you'll need to complete the test. I made a decision for the last exam to just take my time and work the issues one at a time consecutively and I'd finish what I possibly could get finished and my class would be what it would be. Well, I didn't complete the exam but what I did finish must have been good enough to drive my class to a B for the semester. I never performed find out what I have scored on that last exam and I really have no idea how I got that grade, but I had been thankful yet. It was after this class that we decided forget about online accounting classes for me. This might be my one departure from taking as many online classes as you can.
There are so many advantages of taking classes on the web for me, but mainly that I can attend a school whenever, from anywhere. I could attend classes regardless of what work schedule I am working and I could even be present at when traveling, whether for business or pleasure, I could gain access to my classes from anywhere in the United States that has Internet access. Being that the course material can be acquired twenty-four hours each day, 7 days per week, offers me the opportunity to re-read lectures, discussions, explanations and reviews. Another nice benefit is that being behind a screen can provide me anonymity and a less intimidating atmosphere then I would encounter in the genuine class room. Taking Internet classes provides me period to formulate my thoughts making me in a position to think about my replies as to when, how, and what things to say. I could post my commentary after i am ready. That is a real profit becomes sometimes if you are in a classroom situation and the dialogue is moving and other people are interacting, sometimes you can't get a point of view out before discussion has approved you by and by that time it is too later to comment. This online environment has also made it therefore i can speak more openly with my teachers and other students. I have pointed out that I am a bit more assertive in an online class than I am in real life. I used to think that was a bad thing but I really believe it's been helpful as it is motivating me to speak up and to voice my thoughts and opinions when presented the chance. I believe over time this is a benefit to me in the working business world where I'll need to speak up when needed.
Another great gain about Internet based education is the fact you can access the college's library from the comfort of your home anytime of your day or night. You could research articles, eBook content, and check the availability of normal book materials which you are able to reserve and pick up at your convenience. It has been a great time saver for me, which as somebody who works regular, this has been a genuine lifesaver, providing time back to me that I so desperately need.
Another gain to taking online programs is what I call the low cost relationship. By that After all not necessarily dollars and cents, but other tangible things, such as no expenses outlaid for gas and wear and tear on my car. And again, the time it gives back to my entire life. This fact together is unfathomable because time is just about the most crucial commodity an individual can have.
The capability to earn a degree online began in 1989 with the College or university of Phoenix offering classes to help students earn bachelors' and masters levels (3). Online education has extended throughout the past 10 years as evidenced by studies by Babson Study Research Group, the Sloan Consortium, and the College Board. According with their figures, online enrollment was at over 3. 9 million students through the semester semester of 2007. That correlates to more than twenty percent of all college students enrolled in postsecondary education are now taking online classes (8). As well as the trend is continuing with research amounts displaying that by the finish of 2002 over eighty-four percent of all four-year accredited universites and colleges were offering online education classes (2).
Today it is even possible to earn a diploma without ever moving a foot on the school campus. John Campbell remarked in a conversation thread reply about the hazards that can be associated with taking classes from a "virtual college", which is a college without physical campus (1). He pointed to a very good article about the likelihood of being scammed in the pursuit of an online level. In the article it relayed the unhappy story of any woman's online degree being worthless. This points out the very important fact to research the possible online college candidate and ensure that the degree indeed originates from an accredited school. The article referenced what is labeled level mills, which hand out diplomas that are not even worth the paper they may be printed out on (4). John's comment was about the value of taking university classes from an accredited college and not a "virtual university. " A spot well used, but there are in fact, several good "virtual colleges" today with Jones International School being the first licensed college in1996 to exist fully online (6).
Mr. Campbell also brought up a good point with this question, "Are online educations considered seriously available world?" With the advent of just about every college in the nation offering Purpose classes the answer is yes. The business enterprise world places great beliefs in online diplomas, but also gives that more respectability is achieved when going right through an already proven and accredited college as say a Duke College or university (4).
Mickey Killman raised the question about the advantages and disadvantages of obtaining a level through online sources (7). A significant advantage of going after online levels or taking a mostly Internet curriculum is you are showing potential future employers you have initiative, ambition, and drive to do what must be done to complete the job. You are demonstrating that you will be a self motivated and reliable staff. Continuing this thought, recent research demonstrates employers today are a lot more enthusiastic about people that pursue Internet levels than they were years back (5). Actually, sources such as Careerbuider. com say many employers stand up and take notice of people that can demonstrate the power and the desire to seek online levels (8).
And to reiterate this thought even more and the way the business world has changed its view of online education listen to how Jack Welch, former CEO of Standard Electric, responded to this question, "Do you seek the services of someone with an internet business degree?" "To count out a prospect based on a web based degree may be shortsighted, " he responded. "People working all day long and studying online forever have the kind of grrrr most companies could use. "(9) I think that just about says everything in relation to the importance of Internet education.
I've often thought within my journey after i viewed down the dark tunnel of education and saw a light, I thought about is usually that the light shining at the end of the tunnel or could it be the headlight of oncoming train arriving to run me over. With only summer time session which fall semester to travel, I am persuaded now it is the light shining at the end of the tunnel. Hallelujah!
