Motivation Working In Organizations Education Essay

The global competitive environment is witnessing a new shift where more and more companies are organizing their activities and tasks around groups. Being able to work effectively in a group is now considered an essential requirement for any staff. This write up details my drive behind getting started with a Masters course in management at the Bangor Business School and exactly how this is aiding me to polish my skills as a highly effective group member and another manager. This piece of work also identifies various problems faced when employed in organizations and simple solutions that may be put on counteract these pitfalls to increase outputs.

The undergraduate program in Commerce at Bishop Heaber School Trichy, India introduced me to a wide range of topics in my core subject such as economics, statistics and mathematics. The commerce curriculum not only inculcated a higher degree of problem resolving and analytical skills in the center field but also gave me a chance to briefly explore other practical business domains such as management, money, marketing, accountancy and laws. These matters are highly relevant in the current economic scenario which is very interesting to investigate how the interplay of varied forces drives global expansion.

What fascinated me most was the fact that many of the theoretical issues in management have profound useful utility so when applied to various problems these ensure important process and product improvements. To be able to fulfill my imagine learning to be a hi-tech business expert, I made a decision to sign up for a postgraduate program in general management at a reputed school that would provide me with ample opportunities in conditions of growth, personally as well as appropriately. Corresponding to McClelland's Theory of Needs inspiration will depend on three needs - Accomplishment, electricity and affiliation (McClelland, 1961 & 1975). These 3 factors were instrumental in motivating me to become listed on a postgraduate program and work at achieving my goals.

The next challenge that I experienced was to determine a university that would meet my benchmarks and requirements and would show central to my success in future efforts. After a thorough research, I zeroed down on the Bangor Business College at the Bangor University. Corresponding to Clayton Alderfer's ERG Theory, living, relatedness and growth are the three main factors that motivate people for becoming a member of a business. My decision of becoming a member of the Bangor University or college was predicated on these three factors as this university or college provides personal attention to students, offers opportunities that students can relate to and presents sufficient space to grow (Alderfer, 1969).

The Bangor business university provides a plethora of courses in management with an extremely trained staff and collaborations worldwide with the industry providing excellent future prospects. The fact that this business school has been recently rated by the Research Analysis Exercise (RAE) as the best in UK for accounting and funding further strengthened my decision of becoming a member of this university or college (Bangor, Homepage, 2010).

In recent times, the university staff was responsible for carrying out highly acclaimed consultancy jobs for government and non-government organizations with various publications in the primary journals. The Bangor business institution provides abundant leads for enhancing and developing competencies in management. Also, in order to become a successful consultant I require hands on experience and knowledge of global business, foreign markets and competition with an intensive knowledge of global pushes and business strategies. Bangor, through its collaboration with foreign companies and colleges provides sufficient exposure in the global sphere, both virtually as well as officially.

Another factor that captivated me to the Bangor business institution in addition to the faculty and facilities was the students. As the college undertakes only a limited amount of highly qualified students who are determined after stiff competition, quality of students is the fact of this school. The main advantages provided by this structure include:

Fewer quantity of students enrolled ensure that an excellent rapport is developed with all the users of the course. This helps in exchanging wealthy knowledge and know-how from various disciplines such as arts, business, law, knowledge, business supervision, marketing, etc. amongst different students.

The intimacy, good will and contacts built during the length of the course prove to be extremely effective and important in the long run when different students sign up for different sectors at various profiles.

These students have mixed perspectives and backgrounds and sharing this tremendously helps in increasing any professional.

Thus, getting together with this crЁme de la crЁme was a huge motivation for getting started with the Bangor School.

Determining a proper and conducive way towards learning is indispensible to the procedure of getting knowledge. Matching to Biggs & Telfer (1987), the primary approaches undertaken by students comprise of two elements - Motive and Strategy. Based on this, he determined three main techniques adopted by students. They were the Surface Way, the Deep Way and the Achieving Procedure.

Surface Strategy: In the top Approach, negative and positive extrinsic motives play a vital role and student's strategy is to attempt the least to pass a subject. Along the way he makes himself inefficient of understanding the meaning of what he has discovered and the interplay of factors because the purpose is superficial and he has no personal interest in what he is doing.

Deep Approach: Within the Deep Approach, purpose can be an intrinsic curiosity to learn things and the strategy carried out by the university student is one of personal dedication towards learning. Along the way he comprehends and recognizes things in the best possible manner, will try to co-relate things discovered with past encounters and accomplishes the primary task of learning.

Achieving Way: In the Achieving Way, the motive is to achieve a specific goal such as high grades and the strategy implemented by the learner is to do at the most what is necessary to achieve his goal.

During my complete student life I have always strived towards increasing a deep understanding of each subject which i studied. Within the competitive world a professional faces once that he comes out of the college, a strong foundation is necessary if he would like to flourish and expand. Hence, after i signed up with the Bangor University or college my main determination was to create a strong and profound knowledge of various subjects, parameters and matters of management.

In 2001, Biggs defined two main affects that form a student's procedure towards learning - Personal factors and Teaching. These are described below:

Personal factors such as backdrop, upbringing or personality may have an optimistic or negative effect on the student and may prompt him towards developing a Surface Procedure or a Profound Approach.

Teaching: Conventional teaching methods such as usual examinations, time pressure, marking schemes, detention, etc. lead students towards creating a Surface Approach of learning. On the other hand, newer teaching methods such as case studies, activities, lessons, problem solving, flexible grading systems, etc. encourage students towards creating a Deep Strategy.

At Bangor, the faculty believes within an interactive teaching style where the student is free to ask questions which is encouraged to think out of the box. In fact the techniques used have molded various students from being Surface approaches to Deep approaches. This process has been accelerated by promoting student-student connections that cause an exchange of competence and in turn motivating students to travel for an in-depth analysis of various problems and issues.

In short, the unique and latest teaching methods hired at Bangor have helped management students in developing a strong knowledge of various management related subject areas such as Problem Handling and Decision Making, Planning, Delegation, Internal Communications, Get together Management, Leading, Coordinating and Controlling, Controlling Self, Managing Stress, etc. (McNamara, 2010). These procedures provide a unique environment where the students contribute towards growth of each other thus keeping everyone motivated. Together, the school achieves the principal goal of education by boosting the training atmosphere of students and by increasing the efficiency of the faculty.

As discussed previously, Bangor demonstrates a wide range of diversity by incorporating differing people from different areas with different academic backgrounds as you big group. As a part of the MBA curriculum, many times students must be grouped matching to activities, circumstance studies or jobs given to the course. This brings this issue of working in groups. Regarding to Robbins (2004, pp:219):

"AN ORGANIZATION is thought as several individuals, interacting and interdependent, who've come together to accomplish particular objectives".

Working in organizations can be either pleasurable or difficult or at times both. On the brighter side, combining people who have heterogeneous backgrounds and activities ensures best ends in conditions of value addition to the whole lot. Students demonstrate a higher level of creative thinking, alternatives design and problem fixing making sure better outputs. The dynamics attained by this model guarantees a healthy atmosphere within the campus and students left over favorably competitive.

In Management training, students are split into groups to accomplish various motives which in turn help them in attaining a competitive advantage when they go out on the market. Somebody who works well in an organization is in every possibility heading to be an outstanding team staff member when he joins a business. Various positive benefits achieved by working in groups are identified below:

When students work in groupings they pull on each others knowledge and expertise to accomplish better results. That is due to the fact a multiple opinion is always better than just one view as it shows heterogeneity and avoids bias.

Group working achieves best results for analysis studies such as circumstance records, reviews and critiques, studies such as those that entail most important and supplementary research and small projects that involve an argument like a debate.

Students working in communities also make the best of the available advantages within the group. For e. g. in a written job, one of the associates who has a fantastic control on vocabulary can write the newspaper whereas other who has an expertise in the vocabulary can proofread.

Working in organizations makes students in charge as they work coherently to accomplish a common activity and along the way keep motivating each other to perform better.

While employed in groups there's a least opportunity for members to procrastinate.

Group working ensures that individual styles always come to the forefront providing improved upshots.

Group working is governed by various pressing factors such as efficiency of associates, level of issue, external conditions, processes, interior communication, etc. These factors give rise to various issues within the group (Goodman, 1987). Group work is rarely perfect and an example may be expected to come across an array of problems and issues when employed in groups. For just about any management student to work it is vital that he uses alternatives design and ground breaking approaches for counteracting these issues. What remains essential is the fact that whatever one does indeed, he shouldn't harm or offend other group people. Few issues associated with working in teams along with possible solutions will be talked about in the following paragraphs.

Disagreement and implementing a collaborative working style are the biggest issues when working in a group. Each individual in the group should understand that the basic notion of the curriculum behind instilling a collaborative working style is the fact that ideas will be challenged to accomplish better results and a conflict is not always bad (Schellhardt, 1994). You can find chances that other users of the group might come up with ideas that are appropriate or even more relevant and can be backed by evidence. To be able to remain competitive in such a scenario you need to encourage disagreement to evaluate the strength of ones own ideas and also to explore other possible options.

A collaborative working style should be promoted in the group to counteract disagreement. Collaborative style has various paradigms associated with it. These include revealing to not only what to do in the group but also activities required for accomplishing a particular activity i. e. how to achieve desired results. Collaboration is most productive whenever a certain degree of formality is unveiled in the group action such as usual meetings and improvement linens and by keeping the group's interest before personal ones. Another solution to counteract disagreement is to be ready to compromise. Which means that each member of the group should prepare yourself to listen and accommodate each others opinion and sacrifice or enhance his own ideas in the light of knowledge and proof. Stimulating disagreement, as mentioned above, is very effective but what should be understood is the actual fact that groups that only disagree do not remain functional. Thus, it is vital to balance the 2 2 pushes of disagreement.

As per Robbins (2004) an operating group is no unorganized public but must have a structure & most importantly a innovator or a captain or a mediator. Thus, a mediator or seat person can be given for each appointment who will pay attention to all the parties and come up with final unbiased suggestions. All organizations have specific norms that are set up early to ensure clean working (Hackman, 1992). Discussion guidelines such as no personal episodes can be chosen early along the way. Group behavior promotes people to develop a critical strategy towards questions which demonstrates to be an edge in real world setting where a person is met with various pressing issues and problems.

II) Section OF WORK

Division of work Division of work and duties is indispensible to the success of employed in groups. Responsibilities should be divided so that all resources are adequately used without over burdening any specific individual. The actual task can be divided into smaller sub-tasks and each sub-task can be assigned to 1 person. Care must be studied to ensure that sub-tasks should be divided according to individual talents. For e. g. a person good at proofreading can be given for proofreading and one proficient at arranging should be allocated to arranging data and final output. Moreover, social skills are a deciding factor for high performance and members should demonstrate and learn these from one another to improve their competencies (Stevens & Campion, 1994). Thus, to increase the use of resources work should be delegated according to the strengths and competence of group users.

Dealing with Slackers is another concern in group working. This phenomenon called as Friendly Loafing (Comer, 1995) refers to the tendency of folks to work less when working in communities. Usually individuals on a single task are uniformly graded hence giving a major room for one or more people to become laggards. To cope with this situation, guidelines should be laid down in the beginning itself. These can be simple punishments such as if a member will not attend a meeting with no specific reason he'd buy a burger for everyone in the group to harsh ones such as not including the name of the individual on the ultimate report. Usually group participants wrap up doing extra work because they do not take slackers to job and don't speak their mind. On the contrary, such opinions and issues should be flagged at the initial in the group.

Another main issue associated with employed in groups is keeping respect for individuals. The picture becomes difficult when one or more users in the group consider themselves superior and smarter than others. That is a dangerous frame of mind that may cause friction within the group. Also there's a chance where individuals may think that they might have learned better if indeed they had worked independently on this issue. Researches have proven that group working is better in making better quality and fast decisions in comparison with individual working (Cooke & Kernaghan, 1987). It is also important to encourage members to discuss their strengths and weaknesses at the first period itself so that they can be best implemented.

Sharing of thoughts generally ends in cohesion within an organization as people feel closer to one another. Group members should be prompted to build up and improve their ability to pay attention. Group is most effective when all participants are ready to listen to the other person with an available mind. In addition, in a campus environment where students result from different countries and cultures, something is acceptable in one culture is probably not the same in another (Axtell, 1991). Thus, value for folks, their civilizations and values is vital to the success of any group.

Timely communication on all job and specific related matters is key to the success of any group. Unable to meet at decided time or place can result in disruptions in the even running of an organization. Regular communication should be maintained in the form of regular conferences to be kept at a stipulated time arranged amongst the group users. Here, individuals can tone their findings on various issues as well as flag their personal problems if any. Other alternatives such as email messages, telephones, boards, messengers, etc. may be used if in case one-to-one discussions cannot be planned at all. One of the members can be assigned to track record minutes of the reaching and can circulate the meeting records to everyone. This formalizes the process of communication and makes certain that everyone in the group is on a single platform. And yes it is simpler for the participants to look again on the records and see if they're on the mark and also have achieved what was decided as per schedule.

Inefficient time management also causes a whole lot of problems if things aren't achieved as chose. Thus to avoid time lags the best procedure is to acquire pre-agreed milestones for the project that may be converted into Gantt charts. It really is a misunderstanding that working in a group takes lesser time. Actually, working in a group can be very time consuming credited to brain storming, developing agreement on a topic, collating information, revisions and proofreading, etc. Thus, group work should never be considered as less work in lesser time. Additionally it is important to make use of meeting time successfully to avoid lag later on. To do this, the plan of another getting together with can be chose in today's one itself; all members should come ready for the meeting; mediator can send a reminder through email or phone before for the forthcoming conference; mediator or chair person should be rigid about the timelines.
