Mormon Polygamy Results On Woman And Children Religious beliefs Essay

Now visualize a house with your daddy, seven of his wives, one being your mother and twenty nine other children, . Do you think you would have become up the same? That you'll have received enough time, love, help or attention you needed to grow up to become a productive person in society. Right now all across america and Canada polygamous households are prospering, girls are being married off and traded like cattle, teenagers are being restarted all without prosecution or analysis by local, status or federal government. Accurate and current information on the commonality of polygamy round the world are unavailable due to their constant undermining of government officials and census bureaus.

Joseph Smith, founded the Cathedral of Mormons in 1830. Mormons and fundamentalists' as well believe that Smith to be the most crucial prophet of all time. A convicted imposter Smith led his people with the legend of any angel called Moroni, the intended angel visited his bed side yearly. "He had come to see Joseph of an sacred words inscribed on sturdy gold plates that were buried fourteen hundred years before under a rock on a local hillside (Krakauer, 2003). " These plates would later be translated into the Book of Mormon. One of Joseph Smiths' main teachings was the practice of pleural marriage, many in the Mormon Chapel have tried to hide this practice away as if its only participants' are its wayward sons, nonetheless it was common knowledge that Smith got numerous wives. "Polygamy was, in simple fact one of the most sacred credos of Joseph's cathedral- a tenet important enough to be canonized for the age ranges as Section 132 of this Doctrine and Covenants, one of the Mormon's principal scriptural texts. The reverend prophet referred to plural marriage within the most holy and important doctrine ever uncovered to man on the planet, and educated that man needed at least three wives to achieve the fullness of exaltation in the afterlife (Krakauer, 2003). "

Now 180 years following the Mormon Chapel was founded the practice of polygamy still will go unpunished by local, condition or authorities. Places like Colorado City and Bountiful seem exempt from the regulations of all of those other world. Often girls are hitched off to men double or 3 x their age, they are dragged across point out and country lines, put into a fresh house and advised to perform intimate duties on place days. Teenagers are being used as slave labor on farms and local businesses. Yet law enforcement does nothing. " Children males, mainly, but also girls - are generally used as unpaid laborers' in dangerous development and forestry jobs ( Bramham, 2009)". This is all done in the name of god, the father, the elders guarantee this cycle to continue by urging the children to quit college at very young age ranges. Girls are told that they can be mothers and this school offers them nothing, the boys are told that they will be loggers or fence manufacturers and that school is of no benefit to them. Thus these are still left ignorant and unskilled to operate in an any other society.

Like all other species on earth, men and girl are created at the same rate, there is no way to predict a man or a woman, therefore with men seeking more then three wives there is usually a higher percentage of men then woman. Subsequently, these unlikely boys are left to find a new way of life, they are restarted and excommunicated. " They enter an alien " new world " alone and frequently bewildered. Collectively, the young boys who are either kicked out or prompted to leave attended to be known as the lost guys (Bramham, 2009)". Normally if a kid of eleven goes missing, alarms are sounded, notifications are directed, distraught pleading parents load the environment waves and the united states collectively expects for the child's safe return. In Bountiful, Canada and Colorado City, United States these small children are never talked about again, all traces of these are removed from their home and their labels never go their mothers lip area again.

Some of the males find their way, they settle down and become respectable members of the new neighborhoods. Others with no sources of education or family utilize low paying careers, prostitution or live for the idea or salvation. Any number of reasons can cause their exile, simple mathematics or work ethic are some, but the fastest way to get exiled is to question, question anything and you simply make the elders radar.

Although the kids are left to fend for themselves, they are at least given the chance at a standard life, even if indeed they don't view it that way. In my own opinion the woman and women of polygamous unions have a more dreary future. Imagine being thirteen and surrounded by your loved ones, living in the one house you've ever before known. Then being informed that your heading to marry a forty six year old man that has six other wives, thirty two children and lives thousands of miles away. This happens constantly with in america and Canada. These girls are ripped using their company homes, wedded and then expected to perform sexual functions according to a residence program. Often these houses are filled with contentious feelings and lacking in any familial support for the new wife.

Although polygamy is unlawful in both USA and Canada the offenders should never be prosecuted. One brilliant way around the legal system is to only lawfully marry once and undertake your pleural wives as spiritual wives. This allows polygamists to not be prosecuted for bigamy. Another good thing about this layout is government financing. "These enormous households qualify for welfare and other types of government assistance. Even though they view the government as Satanic pushes out to kill their polygamous community, they obtain more than $6 million a year in public cash (Krakauer, 2003)".

Women and children who have runaway from polygamous people have been deeply impacted in every facet of their lives. Because of the clandestine mother nature that conceals polygamous associations, information is not easily available, nor easily obtained, especially to outsiders. State governments like Utah, Az and Colorado are where polygamy has its origins in the United States. "Salt Lake City, Utah is home of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints, as Mormons choose to be known, with practically 10 million followers worldwide (Beaman, 2009)".

In the course of my readings for this paper, I've come to realize that the psychological impact suffered by children growing up in polygamous family members almost mirrors the impact children growing up in abusive homeowners face. Between survivors of polygamy and survivors of local violence and religious cults, these folks struggle the rest with their lives to learn the why.

If an outsider were to talk to a mom in a polygamist family who did not want to discontinued her polygamous lifestyle, her description of her experience would be extremely not the same as what escapees survey. The records or accounts of women who stay static in polygamous romantic relationships only portray positive characteristics to them, and are less revealing of their more negative activities. "A female who escapes acquired reached the restrictions of her capacity to continue enduring intolerable conditions for her and her children (Narutowicz, 2008)". The obstructions in their journey are inconceivable. Probably one of the most difficult obstacles would be the mental and mental damages suffered by both girl and children. Included in these are the emotions of guilt for leaving, their doubtful unsteady new lifestyle and their total lack of family and friends. Then there is the obstacle of being believed. Towards the powers that be whenever a woman records her activities, her stories may sound off the wall or suspicious inside our society. The report can also be inconsistent with studies of flourishing polygamous family's.

In polygamous communities there's a chain of demand which is targeted around one central leader. "This leader is generally referred to as "the prophet" and is the main patriarch of the city (Narutowicz, 2009)". One of the problems with this string of command structure, is the fact it brings about a dictatorship with one power hungry person in charge. Total power will corrupt, it stirs up images of Hitler and Napoleon, which is not uncommon for the prophet with locally to become corrupt with power. This corruption increases the electricity and control of polygamous husbands and fathers, who are usually guilty of abusing their own families and may rightly be described as domestic assault and child abuse offenders. "This problem is also manifested by child brides girls fourteen or fifteen and sometimes more radiant who are given in relationship (Ray, 2009)".

There are visible characteristics or phone cards of polygamous cults. The control generally belongs to 1 central figure. WHEN I previously mentioned, this central physique is known as "the prophet". In the polygamous family and marriage, the central physique is the partner. A child is accountable to his/her dad and he in turn is dependable to the prophet. The prophet, through the daddy, controls when and to whom their children will marry, the places the youngster will work as well as for the length of time, how much education the kids will receive and in what area they'll be allowed to research. Within a polygamous cult, the prophet can take a child's parent away and reassign him or her to new parents if he selects. They can also make a unilateral decision that will influence the whole population where his enthusiasts live, without justification.

"Revelation from God dictates what and serves of the central figure. This is actually the basis of the prophet's ability and expert and in a corollary way, the polygamist father's ability and specialist over his wives and children (Ray, 2009)". Mormons are required to worship the prophet as a god. When the prophet imposes a ruling it becomes laws to them. Many of the prophets rulings are unreasonable nonetheless they are anticipated to be adopted, because they came from God. "The storyline of the patriarch Abraham and his kid Isaac in the Old Testament often is cited to reinforce this control. Abraham was happy to sacrifice his child Isaac because God commanded it (Ray, 2009)". With this way of thinking as their basis of reasoning, a patriarch may then dictate to a fourteen calendar year old girl that she is to be his better half because God said so. For the girl to not follow such a decree would be considered, a revolt, leading to excommunication.

Free thinking and outside information are forbidden. The fathers in the polygamous group are characters to be well known but the mothers are only to be obeyed if they're in arrangement with the daddy. Children are never to ask information apart from what is advised to them by their leader, and this is to be accepted completely. Connections with others beyond your cult are strictly banned. No associations beyond your cult are allowed. You can find no exceptions to this.

Education is firmly kept up to the prophet to choose who, where and what the kids study. In fact, some types of education can be considered a crime. Most literature is forbidden. "A bookstore once taken a book that was deemed un-godly and the prophet commanded everyone to boycott until it was taken off the book store shelves (Bramham, 2009)". All other races, cultures and perception systems haven't any value, therefore, you don't have to find out about them. Math is merely taught so far as basic addition and subtraction. Technology of the body is not educated because the body can be an off limits matter and the men and woman alike are to be covered up. The only real education a child needs and is most probably to get is the training that results from observing the prophet to be remembered as exactly like him.

Their communities are run with an almost Gestapo mentality. Because of the extremely secretive lifestyle and ideals as a society it's important to "police" group customers to ensure conformity. "Even while there exists secrecy to prevent outsiders from learning about the ways of the cult you can find policing internally to avoid enthusiasts from becoming disloyal (Beaman, 2006)". Children are taught that it is not only their duty to record something that if indeed they don't their heading resistant to the prophet and just as guilty. Children are to record on anyone and everyone including parents, brothers, sisters, or friends.

Violence is a serious problem in polygamous societies and seems to be the

de-facto rule to finding things done, the personal stories I have read in my own research all have severe abuse as one factor. "An expansion of the control and authoritarianism exercised by the polygamous daddy is assault (Narutowicz, 2008)". It's quite common for mothers who have fled the polygamous romance to report situations of the extreme assault they and their children endured at the hand of the husbands that were approved and allowed by the prophet. The patriarch uses assault to regulate his many children and many wives. "There are so many children to care for and such limited resources to complete the job, physical abuse is a direct way to enforce rules and ensure compliance (Narutowicz, 2008)". Another aspect of assault within polygamous cults has to do with belief. A violent daddy is regarded as a strong father whose strength exhibits control and specialist over his family. A major issues with this mentality is the fact violence breeds assault. Much like abused children they have a tendency to turn into the abuser it is the monkey see monkey do concept. Open shows of violent outbursts are not uncommon and tend to be used as an example of what will happen to other family who are disobedient.

Polygamous cults also appeared to be ruled by the old world caste system. "The people owned by a polygamous man are part of your caste system founded by the father. Only he can assign the child's value or the value of the child's mother. Likewise, the prophet can assign the value of the patriarchs in the community giving relative community value to his family members (Krakauer, 2003)". A people value depends upon those over you. To include further salt to the wound in a house full of woman, every man has a well liked wife. The favourite better half is often compensated with the better room, a higher clothing allowance and even more usage of her husband then the others. She is also granted one very important favor her husband helps to protect her from the other wives. This horribly occurs with the kids as well, a kid may be allowed further education if his is the favourite son, a girl may be permitted to stay unmarried much longer if she is the favorite child.

Families with more value have nicer homes and are allowed better jobs. People revered to be higher up in the community do very little work and enjoy rewards because of their position. People recognized to be minimal then do the hardest work and tend to be rejected even basic essentials. It is corresponding to present day slavery, only the slaves have volunteered.

As using their mothers, children created into polygamy are brought up within an environment that discourages any sense of individuality. "Because of this this causes insecurity, paranoia and anxiousness disorders. The kid is left with a fragile sense of well worth, uneducated and unaware of any other life-style (Krakauer, 2003)".

As indicated recently, secrecy is the lifeblood of the polygamous family. Living a life of secrecy is not conducive for anyone, let alone a kid. "Secrets can harbor a compromise of integrity, an us against them orientation, a superiority attitude, a finish justifies the means modus operandi, justification of wrongful action, and a failure to receive opinions from others regarding the appropriateness or correctness of what one does (Bramham, 2009)". Secrecy becomes just how of life for these children, the one that is strongly reinforced by the violence at their fathers hands.

The effects of the polygamous cult on women and children who are victims of its abuses are popular, reaching into all areas of their lives, from mental to sociable to physical. "They lose of control of their lives, the cult secrecy produces feelings of insecurity and thought disorders; inflicted maltreatment can donate to a whole array of problems, including Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (Bramham, 2009)".

Woman and children repressing their emotions appears to lead to anger; and the increased loss of self worthy of and personal understanding can cause identity damage and personality disorders. It really is no exaggeration to convey that polygamous cults place the foundation for children to display major mental and emotional issues throughout their lives. For the women and children who are victims of polygamous cult misuse, their quality of life is destroyed, their personal freedoms are lost and hope for their future is limited at best. Polygamy is a genuine phenomenon causing real societal problems in the lives of its victims. I think it is highly disturbing our government hasn't stepped into to help these female and children and that people with parking seat tickets pay higher fines then statutory rapists and child abusers. Personally I am disgusted that there is a fresh crop of TV shows glorifying this harmful lifestyle. Reading these articles and literature felt like I was reading about some remote underprivileged, uneducated lost land. I am very pleased to stay in a country which allows religious liberty, but I am disgusted to live in a country that looks away while rapists and abusers conceal behind their archaic religious beliefs. These female and children are being abused even if they are unaware of it, the government needs to part of provide counseling and help. Education is vitality and vitality is strength and that is what in my opinion they need.
