Mass Mass media And Youth Culture Criminology Essay

Mass media plays an important role in shaping young ones culture. As we all know, the Internet, tv set, radio, newspapers, mags and other forms of media have been built-into the lives of youths today. The Internet provides a powerful system for the youths to find out more about what is taking place about the world. However, the mass amount of information that it distributes may be both negative and positive to the youths. Not too long ago, 'Young who stared at group slashed to loss of life' (The Star/Asia Media, November 02, 2010, p. 1) made its way to the headlines which threw Singapore's public security into jeopardy. The screen of physical hostility is what can cause moral decay in youths nowadays. Local violence and peer pressure will be the key factors in influencing the youths to show indicators of physical aggression while the Internet only plays a minor part. In this article, I further expound on how the Internet, domestic assault and peer pressure can result in physical hostility among youths today.

Internet has widened the youth's programs of absorbing information and knowledge, but it includes decadent information which may eventually spread assault among youths. Website such as YouTube, a video-sharing website on which users can upload, show, and view videos, allows young ones to come into contact with videos containing violent serves easily. (Hopkins, J. 2006. ) Online video gaming also play a significant role in influencing the youths to develop violent behavior. For instance, Counter-Strike, one of the so-called killers game titles where the gamer takes on through the eye of an heavily armed persona and kills as much enemies as is possible. The screen of assault in the game such as using a blade to stab the head of an enemy can be imitated by youths to get rid of relentlessly. The outburst of sources containing assault from various means has intensified the juvenile crime situation, leading to modifications in crime types, methods and results. Inside the 1980s, juvenile crime generally requires theft and fights. In the 2000s, juvenile crime advanced on to banded robbery, major theft even disengaged murder, armed robbery, arson etc. (Georgia, 1992. ) The study implies that serious criminal offences have been markedly worsen. However, the fault will not lie with the web, just like normal water can float a fishing boat, so can it swallow the ship. The extreme amount of information including violence written by the Internet performs only a role in guiding the youths to develop violent tendencies. However, domestic assault and peer pressure plays a huge part.

First of all, parents are their children's first instructor, which is why that which you are as being a mirror reflection of our parents. As the word goes, "Monkey see, monkey do". When a parent or guardian is violent, it would not be astonishing if his / her child calls for after his violent aspect. Therefore, domestic assault is undoubtedly the main factor which in turn causes youths to develop violent action. The domestic violence mainly refers to physical abuse. Each year, around 3. 3 million children face violence from other mothers, babysitters or by family members. (North american Psychological Connection, 1996. ) Youths are highly susceptible to fear, anxiousness and pessimism if indeed they have been witnessing family mistreatment or even experiencing physical abuse using their company parents since they were young. Children may suffer from self-abasement or even get isolated from his peers and have an impact on their educational results and lifestyle. If the situation becomes severe, you will see at a larger threat of runaway youths or youths committing unlawful acts. Youths will get the wrong meaning it iss alright to abuse other folks or let others damage them. Research done by Browne and Angela (1987) demonstrates a third of all children who see their moms being actually abused develop mental problems, which kids who see their fathers literally abuse their mothers are ten times much more likely to be abusive in their future relationships. 'Boys who see family violence will batter their feminine partners as individuals, and young ladies who witness their mother's misuse have an increased rate to be battered as parents. These good sense observations are facts, not myths. ' (Ewing & Charles Patrick, 1987) It is undeniable that domestic violence is the major factor which includes caused the youths to develop violent tendencies.

Another one of the major factors that lead to teenage assault patterns will be peer pressure. 'Peer pressure may be especially strong during adolescence. ' (Kate Havelin, 2000) Teenagers at this stage are easily inspired by their peers. For example, you may end up buying a same brand of bag that your friends have. Such habit does not appear to exude anything, but it is a sign of getting on the bandwagon. For instance, one of your friends might persuade you to join his gang after you have been bullied by someone else and this, only by being in a gang, is it possible to take revenge. Matt Monteverde (2008) stated that youths cannot resist the temptation of peer pressure. Many youths who experienced physical abuse using their peers often stress that they could enter hot soup if indeed they inform the instructor or parents about the abuse. We should package with assault among youths thoroughly, or else a wrong subject matter will be propagate across to youths that 'Assault can be accepted'. Peer pressure can cause the sufferer to gradually assume that 'I should be the victim of violence' and post to humiliation. Eventually, peer pressure would worsen the problem of violence on the list of youths and severity of updates.

The Internet, domestic violence and peer pressure have indeed formed a vicious group that reinforces itself by using a feedback loop. First of all, the Internet has gradually becoming a huge program for the young victims of domestic violence to propagate and share their resentment with others. As mentioned before, that youths can simply upload, show, and view videos affecting violence on website such as YouTube or Facebook. Children who view advertising violence are reported to be more likely to possess increased emotions of hostility, decreased emotional reaction to the portrayal of assault and accident that business lead to violent behavior. The Academy of Pediatrics says "Several thousand scientific studies and reviews conclude that significant exposure to media violence increases the risk of intense behavior using children, desensitizes them to violence and makes them believe that the earth is a 'meaner and scarier' place than it is. " (Aimee. T, 2003) If youths learn to think that this type of assault is suitable, then these thoughts are often difficult to change in slumber of their life. Then eventually can lead to domestic violence in the future. Subsequently, youths who experience home violence will use violence on their peers through imitation. Many victims were been compelled to stay silent for the pain that they endured. Which means only simple way for them to voice out their anguish is again, through public world wide web working sites such as Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter. Last but not least, the three factors will form a vicious circle and leading to more youths been affected to build up violent behaviour.

Eventually, why domestic violence and peer pressure are the major cause of developing violence among youths is because what they bring to the youths is merely the negative influences. The effect of domestic violence is absolutely negative towards youths. For peer pressure, though it affects youths to develop negative behaviors, the competition among the peers can be a kind of desire ability sometimes. Finally, what the web can benefits us are plenty of to pay the blemish it includes left on growing violence among youths. For example, Dawn Smith stated (2010) 'Internet game titles can help children concentrate. Youths who have Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD, can actually sit for longer periods of time to play a few of their favorite video games. Not only will this help them keep emphasis, it also teaches them persistence. ' Actually, the Internet has has an important role in preventing and educating people about local violence. The National Coalition Against Home Assault of USA has organised an seminar in this past year regarding the issue about: "using online technology to improve the movement to get rid of domestic assault. " Their definitive goal was to allow public become familiar with more about home violence around them and learn how to stop the extension of such situations through social online working sites. Utilizing the power of interpersonal world wide web working sites, it became extremely easy to talk about and multiply information to help the victims worldwide.

In conclusion, the Internet plays an important role in shaping youth culture but it isn't the main cause of violence among youths. It is because domestic assault and peer pressure add much more negative impacts that influencing the youths to build up violent tendencies compare to the Internet. Therefore, I conclude that the Internet is not the main cause of expanding assault among youths.
