Decision making is a process that performs an important role in our daily lives. Some decisions are not that important whereas other important decisions, when carefully carried out, can transform the span of our lives. The goal of this essay is to investigate the decision making process regarding my move to Australia for the Masters program. "The procedure of decision making includes making a choice among different courses of action and entails a cycle of activities and events that commences with identification of a problem and ends with the evaluation of implemented alternatives" (John Campling, 2006). The process of decision-making can be categorized into programmed (regimen) or non-programmed (tactical) decision making (Christensen, 1968). A programmed decision is the one which we use inside our day-to-day lives and are put on recurring, routine problems that are often predicted. Here we use information from past experiences to fix problems that we are quite familiar with (John Campling, 2006). Non designed decisions usually solve problems that are unanticipated and appear less often and rely on personal traits such as intuition, imagination, experience, common sense etc (Christensen, 1968). Here people must identify the condition and act after assessing plausible alternatives. It usually requires imagination which assists with creating and evaluating alternatives and readiness to consider risk that allows us to choose an alternative (Lipicnik, 2002). The type of decision I made was a non-programmed decision because it was put on problems that had not been a continuing one. It had been an issue which i had never dealt with before so I could not bring from my earlier experiences to solve the problem and possessed to count on my own attributes such as judgment, and intuition. After doing my undergraduation in Biology in-may 2010, I decided to move into a small business related field as they have better job prospects. While I was looking for my options, my cousin explained about a Masters level in Corporate Environmental and Sustainability Management being offered at Monash University or college in Melbourne. I became thinking about the course and started out to learn more about it by emailing the course director and seeing other people. After acquiring a great deal of positive feedback from people about this course/field, and after seeing my parents I decided to make the leap and move to Melbourne.

Group vs. Person Decision:

When faced with issues, one of the major issues is deciding whether the decision will be individually made or in an organization (John Campling, 2006). Decision making is also prepared according to whether it is made by a person or by an organization (Christensen, 1968). There are benefits and drawbacks to both specific and group decision making. One of the advantages of an individual decision is that it is often quick and creates less of an conflict which could otherwise come up in a group decision. Advantages of group decisions are that there is usually increased amount of information, knowledge and expertise available and people have the ability to bring more options/alternatives to the stand (John Campling, 2006). My decision to go to Australia to do my experts was an organization decision as it engaged many people including my parents, good friend/cousin yet others whom I consulted within my decision making process. As a part of the group decision making improvement I was able to acquire knowledge and recommendations from multiple sources which was of immense help in my decision making. WHEN I received positive opinions from professors and friends about the course I used to be thinking about, my parents became more available to the idea of my move in foreign countries.

Rational Decision-Making Model:

The kind of model I am considering for the purpose of this article is the rational/classical model that involves following a number of steps which provides a structured method of decision making (John Campling, 2006). There are specific assumptions and characteristics that form the basis of logical decision-making. For instance, decision makers should have clear knowledge of the situation and of all available options at hand, and there should be a general consensus on the problem. They should pick an alternative that will take full advantage of their potential for achieving the objectives (Heracleous, 1994). My major problem was choosing a course of study for my Experts degree. With all the options available today it is hard to stay using one thing easily. Also, because I originated from a science history and because I possessed never considered a course running a business, I was just a little hesitant in moving into a business related field. The next phase in decision making was to build up objective and conditions, which in my own circumstance was to do Experts in a course that would have a good opportunity in future, and also I was quite thinking about working for a corporation. Time and money were also quite highly relevant to me as this program could be completed in per year. 5 and I didn't want my education to cost my parents an arm and a leg. Through the decision making process, I considered other possible alternatives such as finding an identical course back home or employed in a research laboratory for a while before I pursued further studies. ONCE I examined the alternatives I became aware that the best option for me is always to commence a Experts program when I completed my Bachelors in Biology. The first alternate which was to discover a similar course back home didn't reap reasonable results as either the price of tuition or university or college expectation was too much. The second choice was to discover a job in a research lab after graduation. Through the recent period of economic downturn, when companies were either laying off people or not selecting in general, I had seen many of my peers struggle to find employment in research laboratories. Ones who have find a job weren't too happy because they were unhappy with the hourly pay they were being paid even in reputed companies like Pfizer. My parents on the other palm wanted me to get started on my Masters as soon as I done my Bachelors plus they too were not keen on the thought of working in low paying research laboratories. Keeping each one of these things in mind I understood that coming to Monash was the best option as the cost of tuition was going to be somewhat significantly less than universities back home in US and I could surface finish the course in a time. 5 as opposed to the typical two year programs. To execute the perfect solution is, I discussed the whole situation with my parents and as soon as they agreed to it, I requested the program on offer at Monash. A couple weeks later I received an offer from Monash University or college granting me entrance to their program. If this hadn't been the truth and I have been denied admission, I'd have renewed the process through the use of for another program at various other university. A weak point in my course of action was that I didn't have a back-up plan when i only applied to one college or university.

Decision Style:

A "decision style, " which really is a decision maker's cognitive make-up is what affects the way the person chooses their plan of action (Nutt, 1980). According to the decision framework methodology, there are four types of decision making styles: Directive, Analytical, Conceptual and Behavioral. We all use different decision making styles depending on type of situation or problem we have been working with, and depending on our internal mind-set. Regardless of the decision making style we use, it brings about a conclusion choice that provides the best answer to a problem (Richard L. Daft, 2009). Within my decision making process, it was conceptual style that arrived to play. People who use conceptual style in their decision making are more socially oriented in that they discuss their problems and possible alternatives with others, and collect the maximum amount of information as they can from all types of resources (Richard L. Daft, 2009). I tried out to gather all the information as I possibly could about this program and the university or college by talking to people, including my parents and by researching online. It had been only after assessing all available choices and alternatives that we decided on Monash.


Decision making could be very complicated and challenging in some instances. It is hence important to gather just as much information from different options and evaluate all possible alternatives to the condition or situation accessible before making a decision. Doing so will allow us to arrive at the perfect solution for the situation. My decision wasn't an right away one. It needed me a couple of months of research and consultations with friends, family and college or university professors to make a decision. Low cost of tuition and length of the course were also a large effect on my decision. An advantage of my choice was that it was an results of research and discussion and there is no conflict for the reason that it was a group decision to which everybody decided. This significantly decreased the probability of risk in my own decision making. I really believe my decision was right and am quite pleased with just how it is turning out when i am enjoying my devices in University. EASILY had made the decision singularly and without my parent's consent, or without the research, it could have increased the probability of risk in any given situation.
