In this article, I will be discussing my learning styles using different theorists to aid my dominant and weaker learning styles. I am creating ideas to improve the weaker learning styles. Also I will be describing why learning styles are of help to students nurse.
Learning styles is a way a person uses to learn (Felicetti, 1992, pp. 15-23). It affects scholar learning styles and how they memorise and store information. As each individual learner learns differently from one another and have their preferred way of perception and organisation. It's important for student nurses to know their learning styles as it could influence the learner's reaction to an educational programme such as; lectures and placement. Matching to Perrin (1990) "Now these at-risk students exhibit confidence and recognize responsibility for their own learning" (p. 24).
According to Honey and Mumford (1992), learning style is referred to as "a description of the behaviour and behavior which determine a person's preferred way of learning". This helps the usefulness of learning styles especially to pupil nurse because once they know the type of learner they are simply they can start making programs that works for these people and prioritise their learning. It is therefore important for college student nurses to learn which learning styles they fall into as it could help improve their success as a learner. (Kolb, 1985)
Student nurses can benefit from knowing their learning styles as it could help them find out what study method or activities help them learn best. (Martin and Potter, 1998, pp. 545-555). When college student nurses know their learning styles it increases their understanding of any subject as they would always utilize their learning styles to plan the work. Also when they are trained in the manner that strengthens their learning styles they would have the ability to tackle the assignment whereas if an Activists learner was trained in a Theorist learning style it might be difficult for them to understand the tasks accessible. (Rita Dunn, 1990, p. 18).
Also Martin & Potter (1998) state governments "One of the key factors for students in having knowledge of their learning style is improved upon self-esteem. " From knowing which learning styles that is most effective for you it enhances your self-esteem because you know what kind of learner you are and would stick to how this learner discovers and make use of it each time to carry out the responsibilities.
According to Skinner (1950) "Learning is a function of change in overt behavior. Changes in behaviour are the response to an individual's respond to events that take place in the surroundings" (pp. 193-216). Though it is a behaviourist theory of learning it can benefit some college student nurses whose learning style is theorists because they reap the benefits of repetition, chance to ask questions and are often motivated. However behaviourist can commence to find repetition boring and their work can be totally teacher orientated as they might be asking educators for each and every little information before doing their work.
Learning could be affected by environmental factors e. g. some learner discovers better in warm environment yet others learn in cool environment. (Hart, 1981, pp. 39-40). By understanding their learning styles these can be averted. As a student nurse, while learning we have to develop all the skills that are compulsory when in practice and as a professional nurse. It is important to demonstrate good communication skills and team work, these skills are essential as we must display our capacity to work and converse effectively with the other members of the multi-disciplinary team used as well as the patients and their families. These skills are similarly important because as students nurse it vital that whenever changing shift, the nurse signing off duty has to pass all the patient information on their duty to the nurse who is taking over. Corresponding to Flin (2009) he states that "Communication does a number of functions in a health care system. It provides knowledge, establishes human relationships and behaviour habits and supports command and team co-ordination". Our company is educated these skills as a student nurse in college or university by working with other students from different lessons and in each lecture we are encouraged to work together in group.
We are also learning the importance of decision making by dealing with other students from different course through group work. That is vital as used we must use other professions and from the ability to work and constitute our minds singularly through group work that is completed in lectures, we will have the ability to choose what you think is best and able to justify your decision when questioned.
According to Honey questionnaire (2006), he detailed that there are four different types of learning styles such as; Activist, Reflector, Theorist and Pragmatist.
According to the Honey (2006), Activist learners are keen and prefer to welcome new obstacles and activities. They like to try it out and try things out and take part in any group work. Reflector will have a thoughtful strategy about things and they are usually a good listener and favor to things about things before taking any action.
Theorist learners prefer to see how things match an overall structure and they pay great attention to details. Last but not least, pragmatists see how things works used and try out what they are learning.
Dominant learning style is the approach that is utilized to learn information. From the learning styles questionnaire, it implies that my own dominant learning styles are; Theorists and Reflector. No-one discovers completely in only one style, most of us tend to fall under the main one descriptor and borrow characteristics from others (Kolb 1984).
As a theorist learner, in lectures, I always like being given the possibility to ask questions in class. When given an task, I tend to think them through detail by detail through using my skills and my knowledge. Also, I like dealing with interesting ideas where the situation at hand has a clear purpose. In addition, when doing work, I tend to be perfectionist by making sure might work is tidy and practical.
I believe that I am a functional learner than theory on a regular basis. Also I find it too difficult in situations when I have to do reading or writing, as I love asking question that is more right to the point in order to help me either with the assignment or topic learnt in category. I'd always want to ask either the lecturers or anyone who provides me with the knowledge.
However, I think it is quite difficult to utilize others that have different styles in comparison to me. Personally i think quite uncomfortable to handle any tasks not knowing enough qualifications information or purpose to the task.
Being at school, I have already been getting use to the long lectures and been taking records in lectures/workshop to read in my own time. Doing this has been helping me with extra reading beyond lecture and making me think individually.
As a reflector, during a group talk I tend to sit back, hear and notice my acquaintances before placing my point across. I always think before acting for example, within my clinical placement, when working with patients, I usually make sure that whatever care I share with the patient, I have the possibility to consider it thoroughly. I made certain that I re-read all the individual care plans to have significantly more knowledge on how to care and offer the very best quality of attention to the patient.
On the other side, when wanting to do an task I tend to rush involved with it without planning which business lead to not having the ability to control my time effectively. Also, I am quite poor to make up my brain about certain situation for example structuring up my assignment as well as finding it difficult to reach a decision.
Understanding of my very own dominating learning styles will be useful for me as it would allow me to work effectively. It will also allow me locate areas that are difficult for me. Jasper, (2003) state governments that ''having an awareness of the ways in which we learn best, the techniques we choose to learn if we were remaining to ourselves, helps us to pick from these methods to increase our opportunities'' p. 45.
Reflecting back again on Honey (2006) questionnaire, its demonstrates my credit score for activist learning style is 8 which sometimes appears as my weakest style.
In order for me to strengthen my activist style, I'm going to make certain I always sign up for all my lectures, doing extra reading by myself as well as reading publications, each one of these would increase my knowledge of different information in nursing.
In order to enhance my activist style, I am going to involve myself in dealing with others in team, throw myself in new encounters and new opportunities for example, within my clinical placement I'll ensure I work within groups and find out new skills and experiences.
In order to correct my weakness, I'll also drive myself into connecting more in group works. Also, having a go at something I have not tried out before for example growing my command skills.
After carrying out the questionnaire, I am able to identify which learning style is my dominant and weaker learning style and the value of knowing which learning styles helps me learn best. Understanding of my own prominent learning style will help me in future if I have an project or examinations revisions to do I am going to know what study solution to use to learn best and for that reason have the ability to prioritise my learning.

It helps identify your learning style and instructs how to build up approaches for your own learning styles. It lets you think about different skills required in higher education and to be aware of the abilities so we can identify and improve on the skills we lack. This booklet also identifies how representation is the same way that's needed is for learning and how learning happens through practice. Finally it offers us the possibility to recognise the advantages of learning while in practice and how it helps website link theory and practice.

This booklet helps you identify the type of learner you are by completing a questionnaire. The response from the questionnaire can be used to help you identify what your prominent learning as well as your weaker learning style. In addition, it defines the various characteristics of learning and reduces the various learning preference each individual has. Finally it explains the four type of learner and exactly how each learner will vary i. e. how they learn and what difficulties they may face because of their learning style.

This journal points out the behaviourist theory on learning and the way the individual learns. In addition, it gives a good example of research that is carried out to aid the information their theory has been predicated on. It also identifies different types of learning ideas that addresses how people learn. It points out how using reinforcement may be used to improve behaviour e. g. negative and positive reinforces and the results of using the techniques. It is also based around the idea that are reinforces will continue, while the behaviours that are punished will end.
Reed, G. (2005). Learning styles and addition.
This book is approximately learning and steps to make learning effective for the learners. It explains the importance of the training environment of learning and identifies the learning differences and styles. In addition, it explains the backdrop of why knowing learning styles is important and the way to assess the learning styles. It recognises both the tutor and learners needs while deciding the environment. Finally it allows instructors to recognise the training style of the individual needs of the learners in different learning environment.
Pritchard, A. (2008). Ways of learning theories and learning styles in the classroom. (2nd. ed)
This book recognizes the knowledge of processing learning and how it leads to effective learning occurring. It discusses behaviourism related to learning and justifying each theory. Also it identifies behaviourism in several learning establishing e. g. in institution and in practice and explaining the importance of reinforcement in this environment. It identifies the name that are linked with behaviourism and learning. This e book also identifies the cognitive, constructivist theories in learning and the theorists who carried out research to support the learning. The book uses known recommendations such as; Honey and Mumford (1992) learning style model to increase that learning styles are not fixed and each individual have different characteristics. It points out how each individual adopt the technique to learning that makes them comfortable and disregard the method they are less comfortable with. Finally it finds out why people do these and the way to take the opportunity of knowing their weaker learning style and bettering it.
