Is Urbanisation Positive Or Negative Environmental Sciences Essay

Urban populations have greatly increased. Just recently, it exceeds the rural human population surrounding the world. There are some advantages and disadvantages of urbanization. This essay, will discuss its positive effects and unwanted effects of urbanization.

"Urbanization is good and desirable. It goes together with economic development" (Debroy, 2009). People transfer to places to get a much better occupation. In rural areas, people will often have small family farms, but it is difficult to boost one's living standard. Plantation living depends upon unpredictable environmental conditions. If it arises against a drought or flood, the life can be very difficult. So people living on a farm might wish to take their chance by moving to the town and hoping to make enough money to send back home with their struggling family. That is why increasing numbers of people move to cities. The development of social economy is the travelling pressure of urbanization, while the monetary globalization further accelerated urbanization.

Urbanization influences many areas. At first let's discuss the relationship between urbanization and society. U. S. Human population Research Institute show:

"There are about 50 % of the current global human population lives in places. By 2050 this percentage will increase to two-thirds, which would bring more pressure to the city's infrastructure and resources. In 1900, 10 of the world's most populated cities were in North America and Europe, but in the 20th century, in the most notable ten metropolitan areas, only Tokyo, NY and LA were the cities in developed countries. But growing countries can not provide appropriate living conditions for so many urban residents. At the moment, there are about 25 to 30 percent of the populace worldwide lives in limited property facilities, or insufficient water in and sewage treatment facilities roads" (Chen, 2009).

Urban slums are places where not only diarrhea, typhoid, gastroenteritis and other water-related diseases but also the breeding earth for sexually transmitted diseases such as Helps. Therefore the uncontrolled increase inhabitants is one of the primary problems of urbanization. The federal government needs to deal with it.

Urbanization has a huge impact on the surroundings. The large-scale metropolitan constructions change the original natural environment, and cause great changes for the initial ecological environment.

"It also changed the original character of the root surface. The changes of root surface cause the urban heat island impact. Urban construction damages the initial river system. Urbanization changes just how we use the land, and changes the initial agricultural land into building land and formed a city function area" (The effects of urbanization, 2008).

So the urban landscape replaces the initial rural panorama. Urbanization also influences the kinds of job of residents, regional commercial activities and non-agricultural activities become the main working style in the cities.

Generally, the benefits of urbanization can be outlined the following. First, urbanization makes our life easier and far more convenient, and they have promoted communication among people. Second, urbanization can quicken our rate of living and working style to meet up with the developed countries-as we all know that the developed countries are high urbanized. Third, when increasing numbers of people flood into cities, metropolis is often becoming bigger and bigger and urban development is experiencing a fresh circular of leaping ahead. Fourth, urbanization may bring a great deal of job opportunities for the folks who are unemployed.

"Urbanization is often viewed as a negative trend, but in truth, it occurs by natural means from specific and corporate initiatives to reduce charge in commuting and transportation while enhancing opportunities for jobs, education, cover, and transportation. Living in cities enables individuals and young families to take good thing about the opportunities of proximity, diversity, and market competition" (The effects of urbanization, 2008).

However, the negatives of urbanization are also obvious. To begin with, the location pollution, especially professional "three wastes"˜ so called: polluting of the environment, water air pollution and solid waste material pollution˜, damages the surroundings and ecology of peri-urban area. Air pollution, water pollution, and solid waste material pollution reduce the quality of the urban environment and endanger people's health. The changes of root surface cause the metropolitan heat island result. The urban high temperature island effect has turned into a growing matter problem over the years. Additional city heating is given off by vehicles and factories, as well as industrial and domestic cooling and heating units. "This effect causes the town to become 1 to 6 warmer than bordering landscapes. The effect also reduces this inflatable water in land and increase carbon dioxide emissions" (The consequences of urbanization, 2008).

Traffic and manufacturer may cause noises pollution, which affects people's recovery, work and communication, and even affects their health. Traffic congestion and poor cover conditions are other problems in metropolitan areas. Traffic congestion is resulting in serious wastes of hard work. Meanwhile lack of property and its' low quality affect the quality of urban environment. Quick progress of the metropolitan population may cause the challenge of unemployment. It really is imbalance in development between Urban and rural. A lot of landless farmers on resettlement will be the biggest issue of government departments. Moreover, more problems, such as increasing criminal offenses rate, over-crowding, might increase, since more folks are concentrated in a relatively smaller place.

But the issues above can be resolved by government. First, the federal government should order the manufacturer to reduce emissions. Then advises people do the garbage recycling. Second, the government should place more trees in the town. Third, develops public transports. Finally, the federal government must control the population increase and increases people's living benchmarks.

It is apparent that the advantages outweigh the cons. Urbanization is an inevitable product of communal development. High urbanized progress is the symbol of developed countries. The procedure of urbanization is same as the process of individual development. Although in this process we will meet many problems, we should make an effort to solve it. So our city will have an improved future.
