The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is an assessment that examines a great individual's intercultural competence (Hammer, Bennett, & Wiseman, 2003). Bennett (2004) describes intercultural competence as one's put on a continuum from ethnocentric to ethnorelativism. As I figure out it, the IDI and intercultural skills are evaluating an individual's ability to figure out and recognize other nationalities. The IDI measures intercultural competence on the continuum that features five stages that a person can vacillate between, such as denial, protection, minimization, approval, and version (Bennett, 2005; Hammer ou al., 2003). Moreover, Bennett (2004) indicates that the denial stage is usually when an person is very ethnocentric, believes that their ethnical beliefs and values are the only significant ones, and thus denies social differences. Another stage is definitely one in which in turn an individual is defending against differences among cultures. The minimization stage is when an individual starts to see the similarities between civilizations without taking into account the differences that may exist (Bennett, 2004). Acceptance is the next stage through which an individual begins to develop a better understanding of the similarities and differences among cultures. Last but not least, the edition stage is the final stage of the intercultural development continuum, and this level suggests that someone is able to change perspectives and adapt their behaviors based on the different cultural experiences they may be involved in (Bennett, 2004). Overall, the IDI measures intercultural competence over a continuum and anyone may move forward or backward along the continuum based on their encounters.

I know that this could possibly be difficult for me personally, since I am inclined to try to always be overly confident towards various other cultures considering the fact that I feel a need to due to overly negative comments my parents tend to make to other ethnicities. I hope this will help myself move more to my leading orientation of acceptance instead of regressing back to previous phases of refusal or defense.
