Thus, this subject causes the discovery of this study. This review aims to find the answer to the following research question: Just how do extrovert and introvert students differ in acquiring English as L2? This paper evaluates why and exactly how these personalities impact the acquisition of every component in British words which is reading, listening, writing and speaking. The review was conducted randomly among students in Mara University Banting, Selangor. A couple of questionnaires filled with three parts were handed out to 50 students. It's important remember that the respondents were chosen regardless of their gender, ethnicity and communal history. In section 1, there have been 40 personality test questions which will categories the respondents into extrovert or introvert. While in section 2, it mainly asked about their means of learning English words which consist of 4 multiple choice questions. In section 3 contain questions about the respondent's rating in IELTS test consequence. From the results obtained, it could be concluded that students who show extrovert personality received English as second language better than students who exhibit introvert personality. In hearing and writing components, this review shows that introverts are proven much better than extroverts. While in speaking part, extrovert students surpass introvert students. Amazingly, the study depicts that both personalities do not have an effect on the acquisition of English vocabulary in reading part.
Malaysia is emphasizing on the consumption of English outside and inside the classrooms as the federal government now recognized the need to master British as second terminology to be able to compete with other developing countries. Second dialect acquisition is the process by which people learn a second terms in addition with their native(s). The term second language is employed to spell it out the acquisition of any dialect beside mom tongue. The terms is also known as the "target terms" or "L2", compared to the first vocabulary, "L1", referred to as the "source language". Second terms acquisition may be abbreviated "SLA", or L2A, for "L2 acquisition". L2 acquisition started out during globalization. Folks have improved beyond their indigenous language when they talk to each other. Second terminology is acquired for individuals to obtain knowledge, education and exchange their culture worldwide. Therefore, in order to connect to other people across the world, people must learn new words apart from concentrating on only their native language.
In Malaysia, Bahasa Melayu is officially mentioned as the first words. English language has become the second dialect in Malaysia to be able to have contact with folks from other countries. Learning English Language as another language is challenging as it requires a lot of practice and exercises. In Malaysia, English language is also called Malaysian English. It is a form of English used and spoken in Malaysia as second language. English is split into 4 components that happen to be hearing, writing, speaking and reading in Malaysian school syllabus. Acquisition of second dialect is greatly inspired by the personality of an person. Relating to Carl Jung's people personality can be categorized into 3 conditions that happen to be extraversion-introversion, sensing-intuition and thinking-feeling. However, Isabel Briggs-Myers added the fourth criterion which is judging-perceiving. In this research, only 1 criterion will be studied which is extraversion-introversion.
Extrovert is somebody who is very positive, lively, and likes social situations. They have a tendency to be gregarious, assertive, and considering seeking out exhilaration. Introverts, in contrast, is a person who tends to focus on their own thoughts and emotions rather than conversing with other folks. They tend to be reserved, less outgoing, but are also proclaimed by the richer interior world. They aren't necessarily loners however they generally have smaller circles of friends and are less likely to thrive on making new communal connections. Introverts are less inclined to seek excitement from others because their own thoughts and imagination are rousing enough. According to Jung typology test, extraversion-introversion defines the foundation and course of energy expression for a person. The extravert has a source and route of energy manifestation mainly in the external world while the introvert has a way to obtain energy mainly in the inner world.
In acquiring second language, there a wide range of factors that will influence learning. Therefore the factors that could affect learning success are vital to recognise. There's a relationship between personalities of an person with the performance in acquiring second vocabulary. Therefore, extraversion-introversion personality of any person indeed impacts the performance of their second terminology. Thus, this study aims to find answer to the research question "Just how do extrovert and introvert students change in acquiring English as L2?"
Based on Hans Eysenck research, he assumed that the autonomic anxious system determines how one reacts. When the activity of the cortex is inhibited by the mind stem, the individual needs more activation and becomes extrovert. When the experience of the cortex is thrilled, there exists too much stimulation and the person becomes introverted. Thus, introverts show stimulus aversion, and extravert's stimulus food cravings. A problem occurs in education when learners show up at the extremes. Learning conditions that are rousing enough for extraverts are too rousing for introverts, and vice versa. Extraverts like to speak more and have a tendency to do something with less reflection, are better in groupings than alone, proficient at interpreting body language and facial expressions, stand out during classes with high degrees of activity, respond well to praise and competition, favor quicker, less correct approach, proficient at tasks involving short-term memory, highly resilient to distraction in interference conditions regarding divided attention, prefer bright colors, noisy music and excitement and need a lot happening in the outer world. They are also likely to use thoughts and create a feeling of social existence. Therefore, it could be figured extroverts tend to be socially productive alternatively than be passive people. They have a tendency to use group work, videoconferencing course discussions, multimedia and chat rooms. Thus, these characteristic will affect their means of learning in British which is presumed that extraverts are good using components in English language.
However, for introverts, they have a tendency to exerts speak less and reflect more before operating, prefer to be calm, better at reflective problem fixing and tasks including long term storage, prefer to work individually or with a couple of other folks. Prefer slower and even more accurate strategy, may have trouble creating rapport with others, oriented toward internal world of ideas and feelings, choose low sensory insight and low levels of activity, excel at focusing attention for long periods of time in situations if there are no interruptions and also have a lot happening in their inner world. Therefore, introverts are quite to say that they exerts characteristic that complete opposite with the extroverts. They tend to be more passive rather than actively interpersonal. Thus, for introverts, they will use specific work, reading and writing tasks and asynchronous computer-mediated communication. These quality shown by introverts are thought that they are good in certain components in British language.
Based on the research question, this research will research about Mara College or university Banting's students predicated on their personality's features. It is argued that extroverted person is well suited to terminology learning. Therefore, this review tries to make clear the result of personality on second vocabulary acquisition by looking into the relationship between personality characteristics of students which is extrovert or introvert with their performance in each part in English language. The primary research question can be reconstructed to form a few sub-research questions that will surely help understand the primary reason for this review. This study seeks answers for the next questions:
How do extrovert students perform in each British component?
How do introvert students perform in each British component?
Which kind of personality is way better on acquiring English words as L2?
A set of questionnaire which contains three areas is ready and distributed arbitrarily among 50 students in Mara College or university Banting. In section 1, the questions are about the student's personality and it contains 40 questions. The test is conducted in order to categorize the students predicated on their personality which is either extrovert or introvert. The question mainly designed to determine their 'outgoingness' or quite simply the sociability personality characteristic. The questions are in the form of multiple choice questions (MCQ) and students must pick the best options that they think they might exerts that attribute.
Apart from that, in section 2, it mainly asked about the technique for extravert or introvert students in learning the English dialect as L2. You will discover 4 questions that related with their way of learning English. As we all know, different personality will have their own skills in achieving and mastering new languages. Therefore, studying their ways of learning English is vital as to see their performance in British. The questions are also in MCQ and if there are no answers, they have to state theirs.
In section 3, it dominantly about IELTS test consequence. Mara School Banting students did their IELTS test especially the medic students. They need to take this test as to continue their studies into international colleges. The test is divided into 4 categories which equal with English components. Each component will be scored from group 1 to 9 where music group 9 is the highest band. Each strap has its own assessable information. Each arbitrarily selected candidate needs to complete their scores so that their performance in British can be classed and compared between extrovert and introvert.
As mentioned in Methodology, the responded to MCQ questions will be examined online and the effect obtained will be processed. Pie chart 4. 1. 1 shown that 55% from the 50 arbitrarily determined students are extroverts whereas the remaining percentage, 45% is introvert students. Which means that 27 out of 40 students shown extrovert characteristics and 23 students shown introvert characteristics. The test conducted will give the cause percentage forms. That is then examined and the result is presented in graph 4. 1. 2. The bigger percentage starting from 50% to 100% suggests that the extrovert students while ratio from 0% to 50% shown the introvert students.
Based on the graph 4. 2. 1, it is visibly shown that the lowest strap for extrovert is band 5 where six students explained. While for introvert, the cheapest band is band 5. 5 where seven students stated to achieve this band. Music group 6. 5 shows the highest frequency for extrovert whereas band 7. 0 shows the best occurrence for introvert. Six extrovert manage to achieve strap 8. 0 which is the best band achieved by extrovert and the best band achieved by introvert students is strap 7. 5 which eight students registered.
Introvert score higher than extrovert students in being attentive component. This is proven where the highest rate of recurrence is group 7. 0 have scored for introvert students whereas the highest occurrence for extrovert students is strap 6. 5. This great performance attained by introvert students is affected by their quality. Introvert students are excel at centering attention for extended periods of time in situations if there are no interruptions. Therefore, it is without doubt that the introvert managed to score higher group in hearing part compared to extrovert. For extrovert, these are difficult to concentrate on something for extended periods of time and therefore, they score less than introvert. This is also true where the lowest band have scored by extrovert is strap 5. 0 while introvert is only music group 5. 5. This implies that students that exert extrovert characteristics eager to be not being very good in hearing component compared to the introvert.
Based on graph 4. 3. 2, there is merely marginal difference between extrovert and introvert students in reading part. It really is clearly shown that the lowest strap for both personalities is group 6 where seven are extrovert and nine are introvert. The highest band obtained is band 9 that happen to be extrovert and seven introvert students in a position to score group 8. 5.
Band 7 is the topmost scored band for both types of personality which eleven extrovert students manage to attain this group and ten introvert students in a position to reach this strap.
Therefore, early finish can be made that both personality does not affect the performance of students in reading part. The probably factor that contributes to this final result is the way students are educated in primary or secondary university. Respondents are students who were been learning English subject since they were in kindergarten, principal school or even in extra college. All respondents are bilingual students and for that reason, it is not unexpected that the reading skill in British Language is very little influenced by their personality.
Based on the graph 4. 4. 1 obtained, it is obviously shown that the cheapest strap for both personality is at group 5 where six students saved for both personalities. The highest band is scored by introvert students where eight students achieve band 7. 5. Nothing of extrovert students were able to score this strap. Whereas music group 7 is saved to be the best band have scored by extrovert students where eight students managed to reach this strap. However, introvert students revealed great performance in this part where eleven students able to reach this band and therefore end up being the most scored band by students. For extrovert students, twelve students have the ability to score band 6. 5 and thus end up being the most scored group compared to introvert students where only seven students reached this strap.
The pattern portrayed in graph 4. 4. 1 is correlated with the feature of the personality itself. The result shown introvert students are proven better than extrovert students in writing component and for that reason different personality will have an effect on writing skill in British Language. Discussing the graph, it could be seen that students that exert introvert personality report overalls higher band than extrovert students. That is due to quality of introvert students itself. Introvert students have a tendency to employ written responses where sensible. Introverts are more prefer to use a whole lot of writing skills alternatively than sensible skills in their daily life. Besides, the theory should come from thinking exclusively and favor slower but more appropriate result and for that reason, introverts are better in writing aspect than extroverts. Alternatively, extroverts are want quick approach rather than accurate consequence. They do not like slower work and techniques. These characteristics seem to be the limitation to extroverts in writing component.
Based on the graph 4. 5. 1, band 5 is recorded to be the lowest band scored by extroverts. While for introverts, band 5. 5 is the cheapest strap where nine students documented at this group. Both personalities shared the same highest strap which is strap 7 and introvert students exceeded extrovert students by only one difference. However, for band 6. 5, it is obvious that extroverts exceeded introverts by a huge difference which is about 4 students. Thus, group 6. 5 is the most scored music group for extrovert where thirteen students have the ability to reach this strap.
At first glimpse, it can be seen in the graph 4. 5. 1 that extroverts in a position to rating averagely higher music group in comparison to introverts. Extrovert students are generally competent to be talkative and energized by connection. They'll not show their shyness in front of other folks. Thus, they have a tendency to take less representation but however take more actions when communicate with other folks. Furthermore, this type of personality always talks without thinking. This makes them to apply speaking in British with other people without hesitation. Therefore, they could speak in British but involve some grammar flaws.
On the other palm, introvert students are usually more to be in quiet situation somewhat than stressful places. They are timid when they talk to a person that they not close to them. Thus, they could show bad impression to the interviewer during the test. Additionally, introvert students always think before they speak in front of other folks. Therefore, they are able to speak in English with a few mistakes in grammar.
Based on the graph 4. 6. 1, it is obviously shown that the least overall band obtained by both types of personality is band 6 where eight students scored this music group. Furthermore, strap 7. 5 is the best overall band attained by both types of personality where six students have the ability to reach this music group. For music group 6. 5 and 7. 0, there is only a marginal difference between both personalities. But music group 7. 0 demonstrates more extrovert students were able to accomplish that band
compared to introvert students. However, for music group 6. 5, introvert students obtained more than introvert students with only 1 difference.
This review is exploratory in dynamics and because the variety of students surveyed (50) is quite small, the effect does not stand for all students in general. Hence, it is difficult to make strong conclusions. Furthermore, biasness might happen during the surveys where the students did not answer according with their first instinct or they could never to be genuine when responding to the questionnaire. They might create their own IELTS score and the personality questions. Therefore, the effect and data obtained might not be true and correct. Thus, in future studies, improvement have to be made on the technique especially in order to boost the confident and reliability of the info.
The method use in classification of the students is also one of the limits of this analysis. The personality test which is Jung Typology Test has 5 runs of answer from very inaccurate to very appropriate and the center answer means the assertion is around 50% correct. The students may well not answer the questions properly and actually or these are answering the questions in the manner that they think would be the ideal answer. If these happen, it may lead to inaccuracy in the info obtained.
Besides that, one of the personalities organizations besides extravert and introvert is ambivert. Ambiversion is a term used to spell it out people who fall more or less directly in the centre and display tendencies of both groupings. In this review, ambivert students remain will be classified either in extravert or introvert. Since the personality test will give the solution in ratio form, they'll classify as introvert if indeed they score less than 50% and vice versa. Hence, future studies should take into account this restriction so that ambivert students will be labeled as other sets of personalities.
From the analysis, it can be figured extravert students bought English Terms as second dialect much better than introvert students. Different groups of personalities do have an effect on the performance in listening component. Introvert students tend to be better compared to extravert students. That is because of the fact that introvert students have a tendency to be highly centered on attention for extended periods of time. Besides that, extravert students have highly tolerant to distraction in interference conditions affecting divided attention. This explains why introvert students acquire better English Language in hearing component.
Furthermore, different kinds of personality does not influence in acquiring English Terminology in reading components. Since both personalities face English Terminology since there were young. Therefore, they could have the same knowledge about British words and grammar. This explains why groups of personality do not have an impact on the acquiring of English Dialect in reading element.
Introvert students is shown to be better than extravert students in writing aspect. Thus, different sets of personalities do impact writing element in English Language. This is due to the fact that introverts are likely using more writing skills rather than practical skills in their lifestyle and therefore they get used in writing project. Besides that, they tend to focus on correct effect than faster work. On the other hand, extravert students like quick procedure but less appropriate result. Due to outgoingness of extravert, introverts are better in writing component.
Different sets of personalities also do affect speaking component in English Terminology. It is clearly shown that extravert students are much better than introvert students. This maybe because of the feature of extravert itself. Extravert students have a tendency to be talkative rather than hesitate to converse to other folks. Hence, they have good practice of English in comparison to introvert students that are usually more quite and careful when discussing with other folks. This clarifies why extravert students are better than introvert in speaking part.
Therefore, extravert students can be considered to be much better than introvert students in acquiring British Dialect as second dialect. That is proven predicated on the overall group of students. Both groups of personalities obtained the same quantity for strap 6. 0 and 7. 5. Alternatively, music group 7. 0 proved that the number of extravert students exceeded introvert students and vice versa for music group 6. 5. Music group 7. 0 exhibited that the students are good users that they have operational control of the terms, though with infrequent inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally handles complex dialect well and knows specific reasoning of British Language while band 6. 5 implies that the students are competent users that they have generally effective order of the vocabulary despite some inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings. They are able to use and understand rather complex language, particularly in familiar situations.
