Transcendentalism and "Young Goodman Brown"

"Young Goodman Brown" manifests features of the onetime Transcendentalist values of the author in the abundance of symbolism in addition to its emphasis on individuality and private responsibility.

Allow us to briefly review the life in the author up to and including his brief acceptance of Transcendentalism. Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, to a family that were prominent inside the area as colonial instances. The moment Nathaniel was four, his father perished on a journey in Surinam, Dutch Guinea, but mother's relatives identified his fictional talent and financed his education by Bowdoin School. Hawthorne was really concerned with conventionality; his 1st pseudonymously published short testimonies imitated Sir Walter Scott, as do his 1828 self-published Fanshawe. Hawthorne later on formally withdrew most of this early function, discounting this as the task of unskilled youth. Via 1836 to 1844 the Boston-centered Transcendentalist movement, led by Ralph Waldo Emerson, believed that human existence transcended the sensory world, and refused formalism in favour of individual responsibility.
