Diverse Approaches to War in Wilfred Owen's Mental Cases and Henry V's Speech

Diverse Approaches to Battle in Wilfred Owen's Mental Cases and Henry V's Speech

The poem "Mental Cases" was written by Wilfred Owen throughout the First

World War and talks about the consequence and effects warfare has had on

the heads of the military. The composition is also very graphic in its

descriptions and has an gothic feel. That shows the psychological and

physical damage that occurs to the "survivors" with the war. Wilfred

Owen reveals as though he is observing them in a mental clinic

compared to the residence he is in fact viewing all of them in, once again stressing

the purpose that they are looked at as mental.

The title "Mental Cases" is very brutal, it shows the consequences of

war and that war is not a great thing to take part in unlike what

the propaganda surrounding the war said at the time. It also shows

that war would not just leave physical scarring but as well psychological

scarring. The poet appears that he would like to lock all of them away and give us a call at

them mental, it is like he is trying to shift responsibility and not

agree to it. As well, the way the poet person uses it makes him seem

patronising and insulting towards the males, as though this individual does not

value what they did. I think this individual feels in this way as he disagrees

with conflict plus they can see the implications of the conflict, feels that they can

have helped bring this upon themselves and cannot sympathise with the men.

The first sentence has a cesaura, which usually slows down the poem

significantly. The first line as well contains two rhetorical questions

that this reader cannot answer to because of insufficient data that

has been given. The poet person is stating it to the audience, looking to

get them thinking about the poem somewhat th...

... e you are able to challenge authority freely; this individual lived in the

period of late the absolute monarchy and the climb of socialism

and communism. This means he could exhibit his views freely rather than be

manipulated by what the king or perhaps queen believes to be appropriate. Shakespeare

however did not have freedom of speech as they believed highly

in God and that the full was equiped by The almighty and that the king is

God's representative that is known, therefore the california king had the right to

decided whether Shakespeare's function could be utilized in plays and

his communication spread surrounding the kingdom.

I have noticed that Wilfred Owen produces about the effects of

"Before Agincourt" in his poem, as he writes as to what he has seen

and just how the men have returned from war and are treated as mental. The

purpose of his poem is usually to express his disquiet.
