Development Of Metro Rail Travel and leisure Essay

The functioning of Mumbai will depend mainly on the transport system for the activity of men and women and goods in, out and around Mumbai. It really is evident from the past that release of railways in Mumbai has resulted in the economic development of the city. The current people transportation depends basically on the trains and buses. According to the data by Brihanmumbai Electric Resource and Carry, 2003 and Indian Railways, 2002, Mumbai is the only exceptional city in India which has most considerable rail network having more than 5 million travellers a day- 58% of total open public transport passengers when compared with 42% by buses (cited in Pucher & Korattyswroopam, 2004). Even after ten years, the population of Mumbai is greatly dependent on the railways as their most important mode of travel. The city's suburban railway was built to hold 1700 people, but today carries more than 3 times its actual capacity. Moreover, it is said that a fleet of around 200 railways make more than 2000 journeys across the location which continues to be showing to be inadequate daily. "The suburban trains cope with a commuter population of 6 million every day, which is the same as the size of Sydney city. The trains also run at a very good rate of recurrence providing the right type of option for travel" (Nallathiga, 2008 p. 38). Buses too are being exploited and the roads are not ready enough to carry the burden of ever growing population. The roads, railways and the buses are receiving increasingly more congested anticipated to urbanisation. Additionally, there is no scope to increase this city as it is geographically surrounded by normal water. So the only options which remain are either to move the traffic under the ground, over the ground or on the water. Owing to this example, it becomes necessary to investigate the transportation system and produce solutions capable enough to handle the burden in the foreseeable future. It would not only strengthen the backbone of this financial capital of a speedily growing country but will also to push out a lot of pressure on the current transfer facilities.

Over the years, there have been many suggestions and recommendations which have been given for the development of Mumbai. Several projects are successfully completed or are either under engineering. This research will mainly focus on the forthcoming Metro Rail task which is being considered as a subordinate to the overcrowded suburban railways. The study will revolve around the difficulties experienced by the task managers in employing their decisions on such a huge range and the strategies they need to triumph over these problems. At this current level the construction of the Metro's first brand which is 11. 7 km stretch out is under development and is considered to be almost ready for the trials. "The initial deadline for the job was August 2012, but 'anticipated to delays in getting right of work (ROW) permits from the government and other clearances for the task', the project will eventually see functions by the finish of this calendar year" (Kumar, 2012 [online]). This is cared for as the first failure of the job and its management as it'll be not have the ability to deliver the Metro Rail service as per the committed agenda. At this point of time, a comparison of the job accounts of Delhi and Kolkata Metro jobs can prove convenient in avoiding errors committed in former. Critical analysis of the reports can help in foreseeing the getting close to management issues and take necessary steps. Metro rail is an enormous project (as seen in figure 1. 1) with many goals to fulfil. Efficient and scheduled performance will not only benefit the market but will also provide comfort to the people of Mumbai, Federal government and the over pressured suburban railway. The findings from the job records of the Metro Rail in Delhi and Kolkata can assist in recognizing the dangers that might influence the development of the Metro Rail in Mumbai. It will also find out the key weaknesses anticipated to which certain programs in those tasks had complications in successful implementation. Similarly, it will benefit to comprehend the strengths of the project as well as the opportunities it includes or will have in the future to capitalise and develop the job in a manner that will spread maximum benefits to its consumers and stakeholders. Developing a sustainable and solid transfer system will add a big deal by laying a strong base to the improvement of this city. The success of the research is necessary as this might further instigate a movement for a much better and a competent model of vehicles system in metropolitan cities and draw out the importance of project management in federal projects in the united states.

Theoretical Underpinnings:

The pursuit for performing this research started out after watching several documentaries on the location of Mumbai. The first one was a Country wide Geographic creation known as 'Megacities' which investigated various aspects of working types of huge cities round the world. Mumbai was the location in another of its shows. The vehicles system portrayed in it fascinated me. This is followed by a bit of research and then I found a documentary on "Bombay Railways" provided by the BBC. Being given birth to and raised in this city, I've experienced the group in the trains and other general public travel. But after viewing the documentaries, it encouraged me to execute a research in this area to understand the way in which projects are planned and managed at such a higher level where in fact the pressure of performance and urgency to provide is gigantic. My next point of reference point was a written report publicized by McKinsey and Company in the entire year 2003 which laid an idea for rehabilitation of the town of Mumbai. These few brains sources form a track record to my research. The target then shifted to one of the recommendations given out in the McKinsey survey being produced in Mumbai which is the Metro Rail. This forms the main subject and the research will be conducted to overview the project management difficulties and complexities confronted while carrying out such a big project in the huge city of Mumbai. Mentioned below are the theoretical educational options that form a part of obtaining knowledge for the chosen matter.

Project Management: A systems method of planning, arranging and controlling (2009):

To commence every research, one needs a solid foundation of understanding the topic area. For task management the above mentioned book stands to be always a guide. After the PMBOK (Task Management Body of Knowledge), the official job management guide by Project Management Institute, this is referred as a textbook for the certificate assessment. The book is in its 10th release compiled by Harold Kerzner, with an increase of than 2500 citations. This reserve explains projects in a variety of stages and gives a systematic approach towards its management. This publication suits a novice level of understanding of Project Management supplying an easy knowledge of basic principles. It accepts and inculcates changes occurring in today's business circumstance and moreover explains them giving case studies. The primary purpose of employing this reserve is its extensive explanation on organisational composition which would establish good for understand the complicated organisational composition of the general public sector organisation in India. In addition, it includes chapters on Time and stress management, risk management and quality management which can confirm beneficial for the evaluation of the ongoing metro tasks and its own various dimensions.

Successful Job Management (2005):

This research deals more with the success and inability of jobs. For Government assignments, many like the metro rail that has been analysed in this research, it is important to maintain the balance between needs of the public, project that is undertaken and the final product that is being offered. Successful Job Management is a e book written by Trevor L Young. It starts by defining success and what this means to various people measuring it. It even requires the reader through the specialized terminologies of job management and leads its way through to the steps of handling projects efficiently. This book does not have any more than 30 citations but will be very helpful for this research because the Metro Rail project needs to be measured for its success. Success means an extremely big offer for the jobs like Metro as it has been constructed to increase the present infrastructure of an city. Additionally it even uses general population funds because of its construction; which means expectations of come back from the stakeholders will be greater than some other private jobs.

Mass Urban Travelling in India (2008):

This journal article helps in shifting concentrate from the task management books to understanding the problems in mass urban transport system, especially in Mumbai. The article is compiled by Ramakrishna Nallathiga who explains the growth and urbanization of Indian cities and its connection with the development of three methods of travel i. e. rail, street and water. It testing three different metropolitan areas because of its development in mass vehicles systems and provides out recommendations because of its growth. The writer takes Mumbai, Delhi and Ahmedabad as examples, defines the backdrop of each of the city's travelling systems and attempts to prove the importance of creating a robust transport system. Although paper is not so well written, it can demonstrate good for this research as a source for a lot of valuable data compiled by the writer, which would save a lot of valuable time and resources.

Evaluation of Public Transport Systems: RESEARCH STUDY of Delhi Metro (2005):

As the research increases more depth and emphasis, the next phase will be going through the case studies. Since Mumbai Metro job is yet to be useful it might be difficult to assemble all the mandatory data. Also looking at similar Metro Rail assignments already built in other locations of India can assist in getting a concept of the issues encountered by the management and verify the factors which can affect Metro Rail's success when it starts off in Mumbai. This journal article helps creating a literature foot of the case studies. You can find similarities in the targets of the journal article and what this research is trying to find out. The authors Mukti Advani and Geetam Tiwari make an effort to test the success of bringing out Metro Rails in three different towns in India. This will assist me in developing a critical perspective to examine the brains data and the documents gathered from the respective organisations. This record has covered Metro Rail tasks in Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata, two which shall form to be a part of the research too. Hence, linking this journal article with the 'Mass Urban Travel in India' article can help in gathering a whole lot of data and can create a system to develop arguments once all the documents and intelligence that will be gathered.

The academic resources mentioned above can set off this research with a solid bottom part of knowledge and provide direction to help expand research and examination of the extra data and cleverness sources. These four sources are connected to the other person in order of which they have got provided assistance and target for this issue of this research. This issue chosen will without doubt have many complexities, which will be systematically handled the proper use of research strategy.

Research Methodology:

This research proposes to look into the intricate issues of the travelling system of one of the world's biggest cities. It centers mainly after the upcoming job of Metro Rail in Mumbai and the factors impacting on its engineering and the problems that might impact its functioning in the foreseeable future. Gathering extra data and intelligence would prove insufficient due to nature of the research. Collecting firsthand information and primary data especially focussing upon this research can in fact help in understanding the difficulties faced by the neighborhood authorities in execution of the plans. Hence, almost all of this research will be conducted in Mumbai where I will as a researcher require myself as a part of it. Having involvement in picture taking as well, I intend to even take some pictures for the research without any help.

The research is related to social knowledge shaping into the journey of interpretive paradigm. This approach proves beneficial to the research because of varied reasons. "Interpretivists try to minimize the length between your researcher and what is researched" (Collis & Hussey, 2009). This can help in being able to access and analysing the info and is a part of the researcher himself. However as the individuals are human beings, the truth is subjective and multiple depending on their view points. On the other hand it also provides a benefit to the researcher to keep an open brain and think in several directions according to the data accumulated. It also links to the methodological way getting used to conduct a research. Interpretivism uses an array of methodologies to help the researcher build up on a strong research.

This research will be generally based after the cleverness such as documents provided by the neighborhood transport authorities, magazine articles, etc. reinforced by the data in academic journals, research documents and books. Document research will be the technique applied in inspecting Public documents. Division of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Employees, Consumer Grievances and Pensions have installation an initiative known as To Information Function, 2005 giving capacity to the citizens to avail the info published by their state and Central Government Legislation. This would prove good for gain access to the documents related to the project. Mumbai Metro Rail project is the jv of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Expert (MMRDA) which is a open public body, funded by the Reliance Infrastructure, a general public limited company. "Familiarizing oneself with these types of research materials can be an extremely frustrating activity, mainly due to vastness and information of documents associated with established situations and enquiries" (Bryman& Bell, 2011 p. 550). It stands to be the main drawback as it can demonstrate costly in conducting research with limited time. This can need a great deal of your energy management which without doubt is challenging but if adopted properly, will grow to be the main feature of the entire research. The other drawback of file research is the validity and credibility of the info being used. "The question of credibility increases the problem of whether or not the documentary source is biased" (Bryman & Bell, 2011 p. 550). At this point of time, intellect sources like papers, websites and magazines can help in confirming the validity and the credibility which might help in obtaining a clear view of genuine scenario. Critical evaluation of the public documents will be a priority in conducting this research. The public documents give a whole lot of information both qualitative and statistical which would help a great deal in understanding the situations where strategic decisions are made.

Kolkata was the first city in India to look at the Metro rail system. Delhi is also equipped with this technique in the recent past. Therefore a research study research will also form a part of this research where the task management of the Metro Rail systems in Kolkata and Delhi will be tested to provide data that will assist in suggesting suggestions to the Mumbai metro rail job and build up a strong bottom part of books for the study. Studying instances of Kolkata and Delhi will also help in understanding the change in the strategic decisions taken over the time period while undertaking the construction of the tasks. This data will be collected from the extra sources like journal articles or periodicals compiled by the government authorities to review their decisions considered on a specific task or by the management research workers conducting self-employed research. This approach will slightly point the research towards quantitative research strategy. But this method will help in acquiring a lot of useful quantitative as well as qualitative data within an extremely short period of time and within the available resources. "Secondary examination is the analysis of data by analysts who will probably not have been mixed up in assortment of those data, for purposes that in all likelihood weren't envisaged by those in charge of data collection" (Bryman & Bell, 2011). There are many advantages for using this method of data collection. The most important an example may be that the info accumulated will be reliable and of high quality as it will go through strenuous assessment and scrutiny being conducted by the organisation itself to analyse their performance. At exactly the same time you will see some downsides of using this methodology too. Intricacy and lack of familiarity with the info will require some attention when using this research technique (Bryman & Bell, 2011). Analysing and filtering the info as per the necessity of this research will be important to ensure the quality of work.

This particular research is being completed for a taught master's dissertation which places a restriction on enough time limit. Taking this research to a further level it could have been interesting to interview people who have worked for this project and to interview commuters to ask their experience by exploring in Metro. That would have helped in understanding the effort and planning applied by the task managers as well as the true success of the project.

Time Plan:

The main research is planned to be performed after the proposal is proclaimed and accepted. As it is designed to be in Mumbai, I am going to fly back again there on the 30th of May 2012. I shall be returning home after almost 10 months, so I want to take a rest and go on vacation with my family for 15 days. From 15th of June 2012, I shall start with the info collection process of my research. I've divided the whole data collection process in two different periods. The first stage will be heading to the offices of MMRDA and Brihanmumbai Municipal Company and collecting all the data in the form of public documents relevant to the research. The process is quite extended and time consuming and shall require a great deal of formalities too. Therefore, I've allotted around a month's time for the same. I also desire to take some images of the website where this task is being produced. In the at the same time I will start with the stage two of the info collection process i. e. collecting books on the Job Management and Taking care of Transport related assignments. After having sufficient books for this issue and gathering data, I plan to start out with analysing the data. From 20th of July, I will start with the evaluation of the data by making use of intelligence options like websites and newspaper publishers. Simultaneously, I will even start planning the drafts of the dissertation. Co-ordinating with my teacher, I shall send my first draft by the first week of August. Once I start writing the dissertation I intend to send drafts to my tutor every 10 days for three or four 4 times. I have place a deadline of doing the dissertation by the first week of Sept i. e. before the 9th such that it allows me sufficient time to obtain it proof read from my friends who work in organisations as professionals themselves and also from experts/ professionals in the Mumbai Metro task if they are willing to help me with it. After it is finalized and approved the final duplicate will be printed and bound before submitting it on the 25th of Sept 2012. I even plan to take up employment after heading back home, which I look as a potential menace in my own research process. But concluding my graduation stands as a priority and whenever you can I shall stick to the plan that I've chalked for the whole process.
