Comparison Of Nuclear Power And Fossil Fuels Environmental Sciences Essay

In the modern world there are several means of producing energy. Before most of the vitality came from fossil fuels; fossil fuels were always used to produce energy because they were cheap and available in huge amounts. Nowadays, due to limited amount of fossil fuels about the world and the high prices folks have began to utilize different ways of producing energy. Nuclear vitality is one of the many resources now being found in order to keep the use of fossil fuel's down. Within this paper I'll discuss fossil fuels, nuclear power and the advantages and disadvantages of both.

What are fossil fuels? Coal, gas, and essential oil are the three main fossil fuels. They have been made from the organic and natural remains of prehistoric plant life and pets more than 300 million years ago. Regarding to Energy and the surroundings, "fuel identifies whatever can be burned as a source of energy; therefore, fossil fuels will be the remains of pets or animals and plants which have produced into materials that can be burned. " The type of fossil energy created depends on the kind of plants or family pets and the quantity of high temperature and pressure. The energy stored in fossil fuels originally came from the sun. When we melt away fossil fuels, we release that stored energy. All the across world fossil fuel's are the hottest type of energy; fossil fuels have been used to generate power for nearly exactly what one uses. Among all the fossil fuels, gas and petrol are additionally used because they are rather easy to move, they have got low emissions, and are easy to handle. It's been said that, aside from coal, the way to obtain the other fossil fuels are sure to be depleted in a few years.

As of right now, according to Wikipedia- "Fossil fuels source near to 86% of the world's energy". This is a large percentage of energy to be supplied by just fossil fuels. As I've already explained, we are currently within an energy problems and fossil fuels are the lifeblood of the society and for most others surrounding the world. Our supply is slowly coming to an end, which is why we have are more than willing to visit war for it and make friends with those whom we really hate. Recently the former Soviet Union and lots of the countries in the centre East are in our good favor purely as a result of oil reserves they have. Our foreign help has the best purpose. Even though we have befriended our enemies, fossil fuels will go out and the utilization of these will soon take the lives of many people. They are important reasons to find other method of getting the vitality we need to continue our population as we know it.

So what options do we have? Alternative types of energy are currently under development even though most of them are only in their first stages. With more help from the federal government and general population support, we may have the ability to increase the development of the technologies and help free ourselves from the mast amount of consumption of fossil fuels.

This is definitely a serious problem, so that inhabitants of the world we should all get together and make an effort to resolve the problem at hand. Despite the fact that some scientist put a time span how a lot longer they feel that fossil fuels will last, nobody really knows. It will all rely upon how well we take care of our energy requirements along with how well we can form and use green energy sources.

Nuclear power is energy which is produced with the use of a managed nuclear response. Many nations use nuclear power plants to generate electricity for both civilian and military use, and some nations also utilize nuclear power to run parts of their naval fleets, especially submarines. Some individuals favor an extension of nuclear electric power crops because this form of energy is considered cleaner than fossil fuels such as coal. Nuclear electricity does indeed feature a range of proble. ms that must be addressed, most of all being the safe disposal of radioactive waste products.

According to Energy and the surroundings, "The entire physical world is made of atoms; the term atom is derived from the Greek term atomos this means invisible. " Atom's, the tiniest component of any element, consists of enormous energy. When it's split a process called fission, this energy is released in the kinds of tremendous high temperature and light. It is this energy that was released on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, by two independent atom bombs in 1945 that resulted in the conclusion of World Conflict II. This horrific picture created by those two bombs led the international community to condemn any further use of atomic weaponry.

Still, engineers, governments and scientists came to the realization that if the atom's energy could be controlled and harnessed, it would revolutionize the world's energy marketplaces and provide significant electricity reserves to help meet the world's energy requirements. It was even envisioned that it could 1 day replace the need for fossil fuels. Because of this, the first useful electricity from nuclear fission was produced at the Idaho National Engineering Lab in 1951.

Nuclear energy requires resources of radioactive elements found by natural means inside our environment and manmade with which to make the nuclear fission process that splits the atoms. Uranium is the most typical & most used of the elements. The sole other available resources that are used for nuclear energy is Plutonium and Thorium. Plutonium is not naturally occurring. Thus, the Plutonium used in nuclear reactors is man-made, coming from a nuclear reactor. Based on the Ecology Global Network, "Thorium, though not yet a mainstream nuclear energy source source, is being heavily analyzed and applied as a safer, cleaner alternative to Uranium. Still, Uranium is king as the premiere supplier of nuclear energy. "

Perhaps the best challenge facing nuclear energy development after any prospect of nuclear disasters similar to the 1986 Chernobyl event is the removal of the highly radioactive wastes. Since it may take up to 10, 000 years for these materials to fully breakdown into harmless elements the task is to store them properly for at least that amount of time. Though it can be done, where and how remain major issues.

Exploitable Uranium products still pose some short-term obstacles. According to the Group for Economic Cooperation and Development, the world's economically exploitable Uranium reserves will probably carry on between 35 and 63 years, depending on whether demand is certainly concerning justify the bigger cost of mining less easily exploitable reserves.

Still, in account of the energy that can be made by Uranium and the burgeoning global energy demands, many governments are inserting more focus on nuclear energy. The greatest consumer of nuclear energy is america, accompanied by France, Japan, Germany and the Russian Federation. In america alone, the nation's 103 nuclear electric power plants each create an average of around 20 tons of radioactive spent energy a year. Spent gasoline now sits in cooling pools and temporary safe-keeping areas waiting for somebody to determine what to do with it.

When you commence to compare fossil fuels to nuclear energy you are able to see that we now have many advantages and disadvantages of both. Because we have used fossil fuels for most of the world's energy doesn't mean that we should continue to use what supply of it we've left. Even though nuclear energy is not yet as popular as the use of fossil fuels there definitely has been and can continue to be, a growth in its use.

Advantage of Fossil Fuels

Disadvantages of Fossil Fuels

Easily distributed

Probable contributor to global warming

Inexpensive production

Cause of acid rain

Capacity to create huge amounts of electricity in simply a single location

Questionable availability of some fuels

Simple combustion process can straight heat or generate electricity

Major increase in prices

Compared to:

Advantages of Nuclear power

Disadvantages of Nuclear Power

No Greenhouse Gases

High first cost because seed requires containment safeguards

No Standards Pollutants

Waste products may be used to manufacture weapons

Lowest impacts on the environment

Possibility of nuclear meltdown from uncontrolled reaction

Lowest cost producer of base fill electricity

Nuclear reactors only previous for about forty to fifty years.

After we look at and assess both fossil fuels, and nuclear energy we notice that both types of energies have their benefits and drawbacks. There is no way that anyone could say that there surely is a significant difference in the two that could lead one to think that one is preferable to the other. As I've already explained, fossil fuels are definitely a great energy designer. When huge amounts of fossil fuels such as coal, gas, and olive oil are available production can be easily done at a low cost with little if any problems. But as we realize, because the option of fossil fuels is currently lessening, we have no other choice than to find substitute energy resources, thus being the situation nuclear energy is a very good choice. Based on the Nuclear Energy Institute - CLIMATE Energy, "Nuclear energy is America's greatest way to obtain clean-air, carbon-free electricity, producing no greenhouse gases or air contaminants, nuclear power plant life aid compliance with the Clean Air Act of 1970, which place standards to enhance the nation's quality of air. " This affirmation says a great deal about Nuclear Energy and is absolutely able to show readers precisely how effective using nuclear energy can be.

In conclusion, even though I believe fossil fuels have served us greatly while they may have been around in a plentiful supply; I believe we now need to turn out from the state of hawaii we live in, one which relies fully on fossil fuels exclusively. We have to venture out and try new means of energy production; new means such as nuclear electric power. I believe that even though nuclear electric power may have some high original costs it is really worth it. As Ross Garnaut said, "A trend in humanity's use of fossil fuel-based energy would be necessary eventually to sustain and to extend modern standards of living. It will be required quicker if we are to carry the potential risks of local climate change to satisfactory levels. The costs that we carry in making an early on adjustment will bring onward, and reduce for future times, the costs of the inevitable eventual adjustment from fossil fuels. "
