Describe and measure the idea that adolescence is a period of 'storm and stress'Adolescence is a period in development between the starting point of puberty and adulthood. It usually starts between 11 and 13 years of age with the looks of secondary gender characteristics and spans the teenage years, terminating at 18 to twenty years of age with the conclusion of the development of the adult form. During this period, the individual undergoes extensive physical, psychologic, mental, and personality changes. Mosby's Medical Dictionary, 8th release. 2009, Elsevier.
Storm and stress in relation to children can be said to be the challenges faced and dealt with during this procedure for progress, these stress and surprise can be related to the pressure and expectation from the contemporary society, multimedia and peers pressure, stress is not necessary caused by these procedure for expansion but by the demand and responsibility that is usually attached to it.
These amount of development in adolescents have various impact and results on what kind of stress they face and exactly how it is being handled, these stress can either physical, intellectual, emotional or interpersonal.
Adolescent period is often thought to be a hard period and very critical stage of move because of various qualitative change that they pass through at that time of life and this issues with breaking from the old personal and interest of the years as a child memories and each one of these periods are combined with significant changes of various degrees for case, all the characteristics involved with puberty such as menstrual period in young girls and hair growth in certain area of the body in males as well as deepening of the tone of voice.
It is normally believed that a lot of if not all adolescent experience difference phases of surprise and stress at this period of their life, (Arnett 1999) says not all adolescents will probably experience surprise and stress, although of all stage of the life span, these years will be the most volatile and also exhibit his view further by declaring that where adolescents do experience storm and stress, it is most probably to express in the next ways
- Issues with parents: There is a high chance that adolescent is commonly rebellious due to their search of liberty and authority
- Mood disruptions: children pass through mental cycle at this time compared to years as a child level and adulthood.
- Dodgy behaviours: adolescents are usually associated with certain dodgy behaviours such as recklessness, norm breaking and various level of antisocial behaviour.
Stanley G. Hall (1904), a psychologist and educator further backed up this by stating the misconception that adolescence is a period of stress and surprise has been embraced by a variety of influential theoretician since his work in the early 1904, Stanley Hall, who was personally encouraged by Darwin, who depicted real human development as analogous to evolutionary development and also noticed adolescence period as a lot like eras of turbulence and storm. He also regarded as the instability, anguish and depth of adolescence as a necessary precursor to the establishment of adult balance. Halls idea is now part of popular culture thus suggesting that lots of parents expect that adolescents will undergo an interval of storm and stress.
Psychologist attended to recognise the actual fact that adolescence is a distinctive period in the human development but regarding to (Twiford and Carson 1980, p4) some adult are increasingly disturbed in their try to understand behaviour of children and also claim that experts have defined adolescents as inconsistent, unpredictable, erratic, emotional and self centred thus creating a general view and impression that adolescence period portrays an interval of stress and surprise.
Apart from the factors refer to above earlier, issues with parents, feelings disruption and behaviour, there will vary factors responsible for why adolescent experience various storms and stress during this stage which is because of the fast changes and transitions happening in the torso and in the surroundings around them. One factor sensible is the search of autonomy which according to (Erikson 1959) identified it as an activity of individualisation and (Freud 1958) also analysed it as a developing sense of detachment from father or mother.
Most adolescent stress is also related to insufficient identity which often comes up because they begin to think about who they are and what they want to become and this tend to put them under a pressure to find their real personality and the quest for this contributes to a sharpened sense of dignity making them want to gain their freedom and freedom of preference thus creating a distance between themselves and their parents because they see themselves as more of an individual and a person who can make decisions independently and this complete process of move causes a lot of misunderstandings between them and the parents which is one big subject parents nowadays find difficult to cope with and will see adolescent as moody, self centred, detached or being too hidden.
Also this leads to peer pressure issues, the ongoing search for individuality leads to them flocking with folks who are of the same frame of mind and this will put them under more pressure within peer group e. g. popularity. Most adolescent desire to be associated within a group where they might feel welcomed and popularity, failure to do this will have a negative effect on such specific which in effect leads to struggling for ability with peer consequently resulting in aggressiveness and violent behavior and therefore of this, corresponding to (Farrington and Hawkin 1991), relationship with antisocial peer can be considered a contributing factor to the escalation of antisocial behaviours which in some instances brings about substance misuse, delinquency and school problems
School also performs an important role during adolescent period, the environment and the type of school also offers its effect on adolescent life. (Huizinga and Jacob 1998) says that more than eighty percent of adolescent have been involved in one or more problem at school such as truancy, suspension, poor educational development and in extreme cases drop out completely. All of these problems might be too much to handle for some if not most of adolescents and the partnership between them and school becomes affected. The type of environment also takes on important functions because if the institution has a higher rate of non conformity students, assault and hostility, it will circulate easily within such environment, also disorganisation within the school structure and insufficient enforced rules and suggestions increase hostility in adolescent.
There is a connection between adolescence and sentiment in the positive and negative way, Hall (1904) also explained adolescence as ''the age group of rapid fluctuation of moods''. There is a high chance of fluctuation in moods in adolescence because of the various mixes of feeling they pass through in the present stage which can either be positive and negative, but the negative ones are usually followed with mood swing.
Larson and Richard (1994) said adolescents report ''a feeling of self awareness and humiliation'' which is reported to be on average of 2-3 times more likely to be more what their parents face and this can make them feel depressed, nervy and using cases overlooked. He also recommended that adolescents article greater ambiance disruptions in comparison to pre-adolescent stage. A lot of the spirits increase and disruption aside from emotional variation may also be caused by the increasing level of hormonal change in the body caused by adolescent move as well as various other invisible factors e. g. environmental factor such as changing school and having relationship with opposite love-making may also be responsible for these spirits disruption.
The rate at which all these ambiance disruption are experienced does indeed vary from one individual to some other due to the several reason and factors in charge of this mainly change in university, relationship with other sex, poor academics performance, problems with peer group and sometimes family issues such as marital discord.
All these factors bought by stress can be too much to contain and lead to various medical side-effect in adolescent because they are under these high obligation to achieve so much at a time such as changes in college, environment, getting high markings in institution/college, having part time job, managing fund, peer pressure, sociable lifestyle e. g. making new relatives and buddies problems. All of these can ponder down adolescent and as a result make sure they are more prone to illness because of the stress and stress put on the body, making them extremely worn out and ill which cause them more problems coping with day to day live and can cause unhappiness thus prompting infrequent stop by at the GP seeking medical help and credited to more needs in accessing health care services, they have to wait longer using circumstances to be attended to and might not be fully satisfied with the amount of treatment received and thus making them more vunerable to further depression of course, if good care is not taken, it may lead to being completely frustrated.
(Kevin Durkin pp 515) states that examination of adolescents may lead to the conclusion that they are doing are affected not from diminution of self esteem but from a woeful spate of self applied indulgent volatility, out of most proportion with their actual place in the design of things. He also suggest that the surge of hormones, the development of secondary intimate people, the stimulus of genital arousal, pressure of educational and job choices, temptation of drugs, the impending trial of adulthood and the state of hawaii the world is today.
Adolescence period is a very important and exciting level in life that are marred by many phases of development and problem, it is a period when adolescent test so many thing that can either make or break their life and future, a period of subjection, it is a very unstable, inconsistent and emotional period, there are different stress and storms fastened with adolescence but Holmbeck (1996) suggested that less than 10% of family with adolescents experience issues while only 15-30% of all adolescent experience surprise and stress.
Not all individuals experience this technique of surprise and stress but it can happen and it only affect most adolescent but not all as it is greatly recognized and portrayed by the press, society and parents.
